2009 Piper/Honda DF5, Runoffs Ready

Beautiful, winning car… well sorted, well maintained, well respected.

  • Numerous poles and wins, and almost always on the podium in Regionals and Nationals in 2009 thru 2012.

  • Finished 2nd in US Majors Western Conference and 6th overall in National FF points in 2013.

  • Currently 2nd in Western Conference again this year, and 5th overall in 2014 National FF points.

  • Finished on the podium in race 2 of the COTA US Majors event last year.

  • Thoroughly sorted and developed through numerous test days and race weekends with the hands-on support of Ethan Shippert (Shippert Racing), plus much help from Doug and Doug Learned of Piper Race Cars/Fast Forward, and Ron Chisholm of Cypress Lane Racing.

  • This car is the 6th (or 7th) built by the Learneds after acquiring Piper Race Cars, and I was its first owner in June, 2009.

  • After a few issues with the original Kent engine, it became the first Honda powered FF on the West Coast, with Doug and Doug doing their typical outstanding job of the installation.

Features and upgrades/recent maintenance include:

  • New this year, PFC ZR-55 alloy calipers with the “11” compound PFC pads, plus all new rotors at same time. Fantastic improvement over original LD19s, which were pretty good!

  • Freshly rebuilt and re-valved Penske 8760 triple-adj shocks, with work done by Bruce Ritchey’s Performance Shock at Sonoma Raceway this past February.

  • New, genuine Hewland 13:36 ring and pinion also done in February, plus complete freshening of rest of gearbox, done by Ethan Shippert of Shippert Racing. This was sadly necessitated by me following some not-so-great oil advice from an anonymous source, but damage was limited to just the R&P, which will now be good for a very long time!

  • New this past January -- Schroth 6-point HANS safety harness, 5-yr FIA version.

  • Price includes one set of the new-generation, one-piece Piper/Fast Forward forged alloy wheels.

  • Aim MXL dash/data system with GPS receiver, separate F&R brake pots and steering pot. Sorry, no shock traveler pots, but channels and loom connectors are there to add them.

  • Hard-wired AMB transponder.

  • Mostly new right rear suspension, CV joints, and several of the a-arm mounting clevises after a recent incident during qualifying at Buttonwillow Majors event. Prior to that, car had never been wrecked, nor had any serious damage to any components.

  • Bodywork is original, fits beautifully, and has not been patched. Still nice and light.

  • Very cool new paint this past winter. Didn’t make the car any faster, but looks great and gets lots of compliments!

  • 3rd spring kit is included for front suspension, but is not currently installed.

  • Upgraded to F&R cockpit-adjustable anti-roll bars (original was front only).

  • Upgraded gear shift lever/clevis package installed.

  • Hy-Tech ss 2-piece exhaust header, with slip-on, lightweight Coast Fab muffler.

  • Detachable lower (rear) bellypan/undertray, also new after Buttonwillow.

  • Engine has fresh spark plugs from HPD, and recent valve adjustment which required nil adjustment (sign of healthy valve train).

  • Car was built with aluminum floor pan, makes min weight with 1 gal of fuel and 200# driver. Can add ballast for smaller drivers.

  • Willing to share all setup info, gear selections, possibly even on-track data.

  • Help with car prior to/during Runoffs? Possibly; negotiable.
