Weller Wheel Failures

There have been a couple of recent failures of Weller wheels here in Australia. A crack develops along the weld line on the inside rim, at the join of the centre to the rim. I suspect that this is a result of poor welding, particularly too quick cooling after welding.

Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Future Plans

So the questions has been asked, what are we going to do to increase awareness for the F1200 group.

As you all know a new executive team is in place, and going through a transitional phase (gathering info, agreements, working with the region).

Part of the idea for starting the Thread in the FV forums was to get ideas from other race groups / Drivers as to what works and doesn't. Take from those ideas and see what we can implement into out group.

In the near future we will be updating Websites, Facebook and other social media avenues.

We will be working closely with the region to see how we can promote the F1200 better.

We are working closely with the AM/CAN series to make this year even better than last year. (thank you to the hard work of everyone involved marking this series come true)

Other plans will be discussed as a group over emails and our next meeting. While this forum is great, only a small portion of drivers are actually represented here.

But remember, everything we want or need to do, will require everyone's help to execute. We will need people to step up to help. We are going to get out what people put in, that I can guarantee.

In the mean time if you have any ideas, or thoughts please feel free to email to me, we can share with the group.

Formula First 101 (FV 1600)

Formula First (FV 1600) Basic Information Review:

It seems that after a decade goes by, one just assumes that everyone knows everything. Well, I am finding out that there are a number of newer drivers who really don’t know what “FST” is and where it came from. This thread will attempt to put some basic details down on the conception, history and current status of the class.

We should start at the beginning. Myself, a 20 year FV vet, and 4 other FV vets met at the June Sprints in 2001. At that point, a document was presented to propose an upgrade to FV. This was based on technical specs we were given by members of the FVANSW in Australia. We learned that the Australians were running into the same supply problems that we were experiencing.

At this point in time, the concept was purely to upgrade the current formula (FV). A test car was constructed, funded by this 5 person committee and became known as the “Committee Car”. It was a ’72 Lynx B with a Canadian Blackhole body. The car first tested at Gingerman in August of 2002. Almost immediately, we knew of FV cars being converted to this spec.

We campaigned the Committee Car in CenDiv and Great Lakes in the SCCA classification of FS (Formula Special). Initially, the concept was well accepted, most by new member/drivers. However, many existing FV owners/drivers did not like the concept of change. Through SCCA politics, the concept (upgrade to FV) came to a standstill about 2004, close to the same time that the FVAHC was formed. In 2006, it was decided to not fight and simply grow our own class and get SCCA GCR recognition.

The class name FST came from our being FS homologated and wanting separate recognition. At a race at Mid Ohio in 2008, an event steward suggested that because we are already FS, just add the letter T for your class and become FS-T

In January of 2009, SCCA gave FST GCR recognition but only based on “Regional Only” status. We felt this was the best direction at the time to minimize the potential cost escalation typical in National racing.

Since 2009, we have enjoyed entries at 32 SCCA tracks crossing all divisions http://ift.tt/12aCm9P

Seen more than 80 cars in construction or raced http://ift.tt/12aCm9V

And have a racing series that has lasted longer than most SCCA Pro Series http://ift.tt/12aCpCr

In the end, FST is really nothing more than an FV with newer model VW parts bolted to the chassis.

I would welcome any technical question about the cars and how it all came to be.

CRB Letters - Survey

Hi Guys,

First I would like to thank Jay and the Ad Hoc Committee for their hard work this year. I don't think anyone takes their efforts for granted. No one is attacking anybody here, there are just different opinions.

At the time of the proposed restrictor rules submitted earlier in the year, no one had really any idea how the Kawi would perform over the Suzuki in race conditions, hence no one really knew what to think about the proposed rule. The Runoffs was the FIRST time that there were enough Kawasaki power cars that one could get a true sense of comparison.

Here are the top trap speeds recorded from the Runoffs:

Driver/Position/Engine/Race Speed/Speed Qualifying #3/ SpeedQualifying#2

Osborne/ 1/ Kawasaki/ 111.6/ 111.1/ 114

Cooper/ 5/ Kawasaki/ 113.7/ 113.5/ 112.7

Vollum/ 7/ Kawasaki/ 111.1/ 109.9/ 110.1

Rice/ 10/ Kawasaki/ 114.5/ 111.6/ 112.9

Mayer/ 2/ Suzuki/ 114.3/ 113.2/ 114

Hickman/ 3/ Suzuki/ 114.8/ 113.5/ 113.7

Hill/ 4/ Suzuki/ 114.3/ 115.4/ 111.6

Loshak/ 6/ Suzuki/ 112.7/ 110.4/ 111.1

Chaoonick/ 8/ Suzuki/ 112.9/ 112.7/

Bell/ 9/ Suzuki/ 112.4/ 110.9/ 112.2

Cook/ 11/ Suzuki/ 111.9/ 112.2/ 109.1

LaBrie/ 12/ Suzuki/ 114.3/ 113.7/ 114

Eitel/ 13/ Suzuki/ 109.8/ 109.4/ 109.6

Thielmann/ 15/ Suzuki/ 112.2/ 109.9/ 109.6

Wolf/ DNS/ Suzuki/ 112.2

Gerardo/ 14/ Suzuki/ 108.2/ 108.6/ 110.8

This field represents 8 different car manufacturers, all with different aero setup and total weights. I do not know how any rational person can say that the Kawasaki has an advantage over the Suzuki. The dyno differences did not show up on track at the Runoffs, period.

My true concern is if the cars are this close in performance at the biggest race of the year and the rule makers still want to handicap the Kawasaki more than the Suzuki, how can we fairly move forward with any other engines? How much closer can the engines be? It will turn into a group of guys just arguing about restrictors.

Once we go down this path, I feel it muddies the class. It sounds great to say we will all have equal performance do to restrictors, but if the rule makers are not going to look at on-track data, how is it going to ever work out fairly?

If the BOD wants to slow our class down, I would much rather start another dialogue with them, based on the Runoffs Speed Chart, and revisit their concerns before we implement restrictors.

I have been working with Nicholas Belling on the F1000 survey that was emailed to the current F1000 field. At this point, 2:1 oppose restrictors. If you would like to be included on that survey, please email me your contact info to: c3construction@live.com

This survey will be going to the BOD for consideration. We will post the poll results, once we collect them, for all to see as well.

I also encourage you to write the CRB, http://www.clubracingboard.com to voice your concerns, for or against.

Thanks for your time,

J.R.O

One Class Compromise?

Doug posted this at the end of the FV/FST differences thread:

So, I'm game for a civilized discussion.

Here are the basic rules:

1) This are just ideas and means absolutly nothing. Both classes are firmly in the GCR and do not need to do anything. This is pure discussion.

2) No drifting/sliding into "my class is better". In this thread, they are both equal

3) Although attempts may have been made before, no "we've done that" allowed

4) If you think this is a total waste of time, just post that and move on to another thread. Don't drive it home like a railroad spike

I'm guessing that if we see too much of the above basics being broken, this will have to get shut down.

Here is a very simple list of the class differences

1. Wheel base can be up to 2" longer

2. Body length can be 10" longer

3. 1600 engine. Mostly stock , but with allowed aftermarket parts and a FFDA provided restrictor plate and W-110 Cam. Develops about 85HP (100+ lb ft torque)

4. Mandatory stock VW transaxle with long box and 1.26 third gear.

5. 4 Wheel Disc brakes

6. Ball Joint beam with certain allowed mods.

7. Aftermarket wheels (13" x 6") with the Formula Ford Spec tires. (Hoosier R-60A)

8. Weight 1125 (with driver)

9. Rack and Pinion Steering allowed.

10. FIA F3 cockpit opening (no fan shroud rule)

There is certainly more detail, but these 10 should be a place to start.

Is this compromise possible? Technically? Politically? Or is this foolish?

I've added a simple Yes or No poll on if a compromise is plausable

F1000 for autocross

Any of you guys know someone running an F1000 for autocross, or have any opinions on the idea?

Mark

How do WE Do it.

So I spent some time reading over all the posts trying to pull out all the different suggestions and ideas and put them all together. So here is what I have come up with, in point form. Please feel free to add anything or comment on errors. I don't think there is any right or wrong ideas. It will really depend what everyone can do with them.

1. Tell people we exist, seem to be one of the top points.

2. Market the Class, in Different ways depending on your target Audience.

3. Maintain Cost control

4. Make it easier for new drivers to enter the class. (Information)

5. Social Media

6. Website

7. Work with Other Regions / Classes

8. Work with Organizing body.

9. Get more people to the track. (Spectators)

10. Investigate Pro/Large Events.

11. Offer Test Days

12. Sponsorship

13. Show off the Cars at Shows and Events

But to all Nay-Sayers, based on all the feed back, it shows the the FV/F1200 is strong and passionate, There is NO reason we cannot make it work.

Setup question

I found some worn parts on the rear lower A-Arm and decided to replace them. I disconnected the A-Arm from the upright and discovered that the upright assembly pivoted toward the rear of the car. So, it looks to me like there was some caster in the rear. The result of this was the driveshaft isn't inline with the tranny. If I were to put it back as is, the axle will be about 2" in front of the tranny. It looks like the rear rocker is inline with the axle at the tranny. The result is the upright is not completely upright, but the bottom of the rocker is more forward than the top.

Should there be caster in the rear? Or should I adjust the A-arm so the axle is more inline with the tranny?

Car is a 90 Euroswift.

Gateway track record

There was a discussion, now deleted, on the track record thread about the track record at Gateway.

From Wheelspin the St. Louis Region newsletter:

The Formula first cars were on hand during the final Club Racing weekend here in St. Louis. Phil McSherry set a new track record (NTR) on Saturday at 1:08.667 (86.504 mph) while Robert Clark picked up the win. McSherry took the win on Sunday, but his NTR didn't last long as Doug Seim turned a 1:08.658 (86.516 mph) that day.

NovaKar rubber

I'm interested in finding out if the Novakar rubber setup provides a significant amount of rebound dampening or is this accomplished by adjusting the torque values of the pivot bolts on the bellcranks? I am driving an Invader and am thinking of upgrading to Novakar rubber suspension system to take advantage of what seems to be superior rebound dampening compared to what is currently in my car.

Main differences between Fst and FV

I've looked through a few threads and didn't seem to find the answer.

I've seen the FV running around Portland PIR but don't know much about FST

Formula Vee Association of NSW December 2014 Magazine

1984 Red Devil barn find for free! Just come and get it.

So for years when travelling between my home and my hunting property in Southeast Pennsylvania, I saw this racecar along with many other street cars crammed into a glass-fronted building on private property.

I always said to myself that I should contact that property owner to see if any of the cars were for sale.

Well one day I did. Yes was the answer.

The older man, a Vietnam Vet, was going through some health issues, but that didn't stop him from enthusiastically talking about cars and racing for hours on that day that my wife and I went up with my trailer to his farm. Turns out he had done Summit Point, The Glen and others and was an avid SCCA F440 guy back in the 80's. The car had been sitting since then.

I knew it's value was closer to zero than to what I paid him for it. I didn't mind at all. I know it helped him and his wife out and they were never going to do anything with it anyway. So I took it home.

My wife and I spent the next 3 weeks recovering from Poison Ivy.

I performed what amounts to the first 5-10 hours of what a total restoration would entail. Vacuuming the years of leaves and dirt out of it. Washing the body panels and completely tearing down the car and taking the engine out. Kawasaki TC440A-B201. Cleaning the carburetors, etc.

So I've done all the nitty gritty hard stuff to get it ready to be rebuilt, but I would like to focus on other projects right now. It was somewhat of a whim anyway. If you want to do this restoration or just need the chassis or the engine or any other parts, it's yours for free, but you have to take it all. Come and get it. Montgomery County, PA.
