Finally winter is over!

The 2016 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship is just 4 weeks from the opening weekend at one of the great North American Tracks Canadian Tire Motorsports Park aka MOSPORT. Testing kicks off the official CASC season the week prior at Shannonville Motorsport Park with 2 days of running May 6-7. Looking forward to seeing friends and getting back to the track here at home.

Brian.

Looking for written off chassis FM, FV, FC, FE

I'm looking for a formula style chassis from which I would like to build a sim/static display. I can work with either carbon or tube chassis. I'm 6'2" 185lb.

Because it's a sim/static I don't mind bent, damaged units.

I would prefer bodywork on, but am willing to look at just the chassis also.

Thanks guys.

wet vs dry suit

One of the great thing about this USMC science job is the great conferences I get to go to a couple of times a year. This week I'm in Raleigh visiting UNC, NC State, Duke, and a bunch of companies in Research Triangle.

Today I spent an hour or so with the textile research guys at NC State - they are the guys that test new materials for the military, firefighters, and some racing applications. They have a really cool set of test cells with propane flamethrowers that roast instrumented dummies.

So I asked them to settle a long time debate on this site - if a wet suit compromised it's safety - and the answer from multiple researchers and the techs that ran the chamber was a resounding YES. I was advised to stay as dry as possible but what really surprised me was the need to immediately get out of any suit you've been in a fire in.

turns out that the hot exterior of the suit will continue to transmit heat (albeit somewhat slowly) to the inside of the suit. Even flexing elbows and knees will bring hot material closer to the skin and give you significant burns on those areas. The outside of the suit could be several hundred degrees - so corner workers need to be careful.

So you either need to be doused with water to cool off the suit or get out of it and the helmet as soon as you are away from the fire. they indicated it was just a matter of several seconds before you start to get burned.

Four seconds in a single layer coverall (like a flight suit) will result in 2nd and 3rd degree burns over about 30% of your body.

Those shelters that wildland fire fighters carry? they're just body bags. In about 10 seconds they burn completely through - not that it matters because the air inside is so hot that lung damage is pretty inevitable.

How low can you go (rotor mounting tab thickness that is)?

Well I went out and bought rotors from Primus (thanks, Brad!), but (naturally), I've discovered a couple of small fitment issues as I'm using them not on the DB-1 for which they were intended, but on my RF89.

Firstly, the replacement uprights on the front have arms that support the calliper that get slightly wider from the tip to the base, and so the inner corner of the mounting tabs on the rotor are actually making contact.

Second, at the rear there is just next to no clearance between the mounting tabs and the back of the rotor. Not technically a problem, but still.

So what I'm thinking of doing is milling the back side of the mounting tabs down to about half the thickness of the rotor. From about 0.306", down to just under 0.15". That should allow me to use AN-4 bolts with the correct grip length to fasten the rotors to the hats with none of the nut's head protruding past the back face of the rotor.

The amount of material remaining is going to be almost identical to what would be left behind if I used flat-head cap screws with 82 degree included angle countersunk heads, and I'd have the non-threaded shank of the bolt passing right through the rotor and the aluminum hat for a good shear load situation.

Any thoughts? Anyone ever do anything similar?

Carb Question

I am having a bit of fuel seeping from one of the cover screws. Looking at the gasket design, it looks like there is really no way for the gasket to seal the screw with the oval style hole going into the float area. I looked and all the gaskets in the rebuild kits seem to be this way. Is this common or can I use a sealer for the screw?

Also, is there a better barb fitting setup for the fuel inlet? I have to really crank down on the hose clamp (1/4" hose) and it still seeps a little.

FS: OMP 6-point formula belts (expired)

My belts expired in 2015. Red OMP 6-point with D-ring style anti-sub straps. Not doing me any good. A little used looking but still in good shape, no rips or tears. I can text you a picture if needed.

If you come to Richland, WA area and get them (or at any conference race this year), I'll take a can of Guinness.

If you want me to ship them I can do that, but better make it a 12-pack (plus cost of shipping).

Thanks,
Pat

9 time national champion D mod autocrosser for sale

This is the legendary YC-3 built by Del Long in 2002.

It is a six time national champ with Cashmore driving, two runner ups as well when various problems intruded, three Ladies championships at the hand of Denise Cashmore and too many national tour victories and podiums to list.

It is a Lotus 7 replica chassis CMC built with an Acura K20 A2 engine, a two speed Toyota Corolla tranny (3 and 4 plus R, 1 and 2 were taken off the shafts to save weight) and a Winters quick change circle trac rear end with at least 6 ratios available (change gearing in 15 minutes). The brakes all have willwood aluminum calipers and lightweight rotors. The clutch is a single disc racing clutch. Flywheel is aluminum.

The engine let go at the end of the first run of the second day at Nationals last year. Although others posted faster second day times they were unable to beat Jeff Cashmore's time on the aggregate.

We have rebuilt the motor with Brian Crower sportsman rods replacing the scats at 100 grams lighter per rod. The pistons are now 13.5s vs last years 12.5 CR Mahle. New springs, retainers and BC cams. The engine is set up to run E 85. It puts out about 250 hp at the flywheel with a lovely flat torque curve which makes it easy to launch. Shifting is optional on most courses. The quick change allows it to be fine tuned for the course for optimal urge without getting into the rev limiters. About 9000 rpm usable.

I am 67 years old and although I ran a lot last year I never really mastered this car. I have concluded that I won't ever master it. It deserves a faster driver. I'd like to recoup most of my investment if possible.

Car includes three extra sets of Real rims with tires mounted. Three sets of tires with low runs on them are mounted plus an oldish set of treaded rains. Six new Hoosiers won at nationals are included still in the box.....4 rear and 2 front.

Lots of "spare" parts included.

$27,500, will consider Formula ford trade if it has a Honda engine with an alternator. Also will consider a Lotus Elise trade. I'll consider any reasonable offer.

I will run it until sold, developing it as we run. There are some parts which can be lightened here and there and I'd love to add some downforce to the front and rear.

I have a nice 26' x 8.5 Haulmark enclosed trailer with one season on new tires. The trailer has two lights inside plus a lot of tie down tracks. $5000.
