Formula 500 as a whole!!

First the MC motors were to be brought in as a alternative "future of the sport" power-plant alternative. I was one of the first to express interest in this power-plant option, and myself and others with a interest finally after years of talking about it, a group presented it to SCCA. The proposal was from the beginning that it -if allowed- would be brought in under the current benchmark power-plants performance levels, and Competition Adjustments would be made accordingly. This proposed change unfortunately started a large separation in our class! A class that for the most part was a very close nit group. The proposal after a long period of time, due to some wanting to deviate from the original proposal of power-plant change only!! Not wheelbase, shocks, 13 inch tires.........................!!! The motor was allowed and was given a standard starting restrictor, then another small change in restrictor was made. Again with all knowing that the MC motor cars were subject to competition adjustments at any time, but the motor that so many were PASSIONATE about was and is now allowed to run on a National level!

If we take time to look at the facts -printed event time sheets-I think the numbers tell the true story!

WE ARE AS CLOSE AS THE TWO VERY DIFFERENT DRIVE TRAINS COULD POSSIBLY BE AT THIS TIME GIVEN THE COMPARATIVE DATA THAT'S CURRENTLY AVAILABLE!!!!!

Lets be honest, take a driver with experience driving a 2 stroke power-train car, he has a established part of the racing field he normally runs at competitively on a regular basis. Give the same driver ample amount of seat time to get acclimated to a completely different driving style needed to drive the MC powered car, and you will find he will still run at the same competitive level as he did before. He may prefer one over the other, but he will still compete at his given level! EXAMPLE = This years runoffs. Brian won because of Brian and his father!!! Brian drove as well as I have ever seen him drive, he hit his marks, he ran his own pace, and never deviated from his race! The car was prepared meticulously by his father and Brad Hueling. The car ran superb, and Brian drove superb!! But lets also look back throughout the season to get there. Brian drove MC powered cars to qualify to get there. At the races he ran in the MC car he ran where? Up front where he always runs, but his time and performance was not far above what few top running Snowmobile powered cars had run in times past, the top runners in that class had bad days, and failures, but the times are still the baseline past and current. I might add that if Brian would have been in a car that they owned or maintained on a regular basis, not a borrowed car the out come would have been different, he would have been a little faster but no faster than Clint or Calvin . Also Mike M had problems that were not a common thing for he and his father. But look at his past times. They have set the bar, and a very respectable one at that, and I really hate that they were so rudely accused of purposely being off their game! Also due to the constant drama and unrest a few of my drivers also moved on to other classes, and or have elected to not compete as much. I have encouraged all to compete together, stop the drama, and become ONE CLASS again.

The starting and finishing positions for any given driver will still be the same as they ran previously. I am a car manufacturer, and repair and support race cars and drivers so yes I have a agenda. But I also try to do the best I can to support my customers. If shifting was keeping you from this class like I have heard from people before, then it is not a issue now! But some prefer the simplicity of gas and brake = and some drivers don't necessarily need another thing clouding their thoughts -TED SIMMONS- JUST KIDDING Ted has done a good job of learning how to shift and adjust!!! But he is a example of someone who hasent really changed where in the field he normally competes at, he just wanted to shift!! And I will also say he doesn't limit his racing to one divided group or the other- he is like me I have supported both in a effort to return to one.

Myself and others involved hope to be announcing some things we are working on in hope of bringing some excitement and competition back to our class in efforts to grow and return to what we have been in the past! We hope that all will step back and think about things and come out and compete more! It would be so nice to see faces old and new come join in something that can be great again!!

As well the club is working hard to bring excitement and passion back to our racers, and I look forward to new and exciting news to come out of Topeka throughout the year to help grow our future!!!

Lola T-340 FF

This is a really nice and well sorted Formula Ford. I have raced against it over the years and had some really memorable battles! Its owner is a friend of mine and has moved up to Formula Atlantic. It has fresh paint as well as recent attention to many small items such as hoses, wiring, hydraulics and all the little details that need work with many cars on the market. This Lola has all of those details taken care of. All these items are new: Starter, master cylinders, all instruments, many suspension rod ends, windscreen, battery, large fire system and AN brake lines. The belts, however, are out of date and need replacement. The car has a tremendous load of usable spares as you can see from the list below. It is now in our shop and I'll add photos with the body removed tomorrow. The last car I advertised with Apex sold in two days, so I wanted to get this one listed quickly. Please contact me and I'll be happy to answer any question.

Solo vee rear suspension.

So I keep getting the idea in my head to abandon my current late 60s vintage solo vee chassis and build a new chassis from scratch. Currently the car runs 2 rear shocks and a z bar. I know this is ancient technology in the racing vee world, with current cars utilizing zero roll resistance designs. The question is, does zero roll style suspension help with the low speed cornering we experience in autocross, or am I better off with a z bar and stiff springs.

My initial thought is to utilize stiff enough springs the car essentially becomes a large go cart or 500 style with minimal suspension travel. Maybe I am completely off base. As always the goal is to eliminate as much understeer as possible.

1977 Zink Z10C for sale

1977 Zink Z10C

The car sat in storage for about eight years until I brought it back to life a few years ago. Originally a Texas road racer, it was converted to AutoX duty (removed fire extinguisher and mirrors, and fixed layshaft first gear installed) in the 90’s. Has been dodging cones on and off ever since. After I bought it I went through the systems thoroughly to get it back up to speed, which included:

New Girling master cylinder for clutch, fresh rebuild on other two master cylinders

Replaced all braided stainless and high temp oil, fuel, and coolant lines, including (most) of the fittings

New braided stainless brake lines

New Pipercross air filter

Exhaust painted w/high temp paint

New OMP belts

New OMP D-Ring suede steering wheel w/ quick release

New Shift-i LED sequential shift lights, works with MSD rev limiter

Race prepped distributor

New Bosch coil

Race prepped Toyota starter motor

New CV joint

New belt

Fresh coolant, ATE brake fluid, Redline shockproof transaxle fluid, Valvoline high zinc racing oil (duh)

New fuel filter with glass sight tube

Rebuilt all four brake calipers

New KPF Red brake pads all around

New on-board battery w/ transferable 10 year warranty

New jump battery w/ heavy duty quick disconnect

New Hoosier RB25 slicks (only two runs on them, stored wrapped, off the car, at 60 degrees)

One run Hoosier rains, fronts only

Bilstein shocks, revalved by Bilstein per specs from Jim Garry. Will include dyno sheets.

Resprayed body work Lotus Krypton Green (Space Invaders graphics are vinyl) with full SCCA solo sticker set for national tour events and prosolo events

Also comes with:

Trailer – kind of ugly homebrew, but it’s sturdy and has ramps that store up under the car and has flush tie downs for strapping the car in.

Extensive spares package – I recently moved, and like a schmuck I can’t find my inventory list of what there is, but if anyone is interested I can make a new list. There’s three boxes full of good stuff, such as: two spare carburetors, spare coils, distributor caps, lots of suspension pieces, lots of extra gearsets, pushrods, valvetrain, valve cover, two brake calipers, four shocks and springs, master cylinder, steering wheel, range of rev limiter modules, yad yada yada. You get the idea, lots of useful bits. I think there’s even a brand new camber/caster/toe set in there somewhere.

Car cover – not fitted, but good for keeping the dust off.

Formula car jack

Twelve Revolution wheels, black w/polished lip

Binder full of detailed notes, receipts, data, SCCA logbooks, etc from previous owners

One copy of the book How to Build and Maintain Competitive (yet legal) Formula Ford 1600 Engines, which might come in handy because…

Here’s the bad part: The last time I had the car out the motor let go. I believe it’s a spun bearing based on what others have said. I shut it down quickly and checked the oil. There were no signs of metal in the oil at the time, so I doubt it got too bad inside. I knew the motor needed to be refreshed when I got it, based on hours run, so this didn’t come as much of a surprise, and if it hadn’t happened the new owner would still need to give it a going over anyway. The motor was built to the letter of the law last time and ran very strong until, you know, it didn’t. It wasn’t a catastrophic failure by any means, and I have no doubt it would start up today if you wanted it to, but I’ve let it be.

Shortly after this happened we had a baby, bought a house (that needs lots of work) and so on. All my money and time has been diverted from racing for the time being, and I don’t see that changing in the near future, which is why I’ve decided to sell the car instead of just getting it fixed. After all the work I’ve put into it I hate to see it go, but it’s just sitting in the garage holding the trailer down, so I might as well let someone else enjoy it.

Frame checked for cracks and nothing detected. There’s a few paint chips and it’s a little dirty in places (seriously, who paints a race car frame white?), but it’s in great shape in the typically suspect places.

The suspension is set perfectly (in my mind) for autoX duty, soft enough to have some compliance on rougher lots, but very neutral and easily throttle adjustable mid turn. Will oversteer if you want it to obviously, but there’s no understeer. As far as fitment goes, I’m 6’-3”, 210 and fit fine. The seat is the aluminum shell with a truck firewall sound proofing material (basically a dense foam with reflective aluminum backing, does nothing for sound deadening here, but is surprisingly comfortable and heat/flame resistant). I have wide shoulders too and have plenty of room to spare, so it’s quite roomy (relatively speaking). If you’re smaller, the pedals are adjustable and you could just add a bead seat to fit your backside.

If you want to see pictures of anything in particular let me know.

This would be a great car for someone to jump into CM at a reasonable cost.

$7,900 obo

New car cover

I have a new cover made by Race Coverall, it is blue and comes in a storage bag. They go for $275, will sell for $200 shipped. I ordered this to use on a different car and it arrived after I had sold the car. It was put on a car one time to see what it looked like, will trade for a SRF cover!

016 or 014?

I'm sure this has been talked about a lot but I cant find any real back to back comparisons. The question is: If you put the same decent driver in both cars which is going to be faster the Swift 014 or 016? and why? Also, which is the better car maintenance wise? parts availability, engine rebuilds (think I know the answer to that one), ease to work on etc? which is the car to have if you want to be nationally competitive? opinions, feedback, comments all welcome....

Thanks,

JP

5 year belts cheap, and seq. shift light

For sale:

Belts are reweb by Trackside Tim, good for 5 years. OMP camlock, all bolt-ins. I found an option that fit my Swift better. [In the interest of full disclosure, some say the three inch belt is not as safe as a 2 inch belt]

$75

Sequential shift light: Hasn't been connected for years, but worked when I took it off the car [and got a CDS system] Since I can't swear by it, I'll offer it as bait for APEX contributions;

$50 to Apexspeed, mailed when Doug PMs me he got a check, or send me a check and I'll forward it once it clears.

WTB Quick jack

I am looking for a new or like new quick jack. The kind that rolls under the car, not connecting to anything. Pegasus is out of stock. The ones for sale on here, seems no one wants to ship. Anyone know of any other racing supply place that sells these? Google has some ideas, but all are priced in pounds, so I am assuming that they are over seas.

Accuspark Dizzies

So my Bosch dizzy is on it's last legs, and I have been trawling the posts on Apex to see what my best options for replacement may be. This thread http://ift.tt/1ETmwMc mentions an Accuspark dizzy out of the UK. I have looked at their website prices and they are better than reasonable.

The person that mentioned them posted in July 2013 about them, so the question is, does anyone know how they went? Are they useless? Are they good? Anyone with any experiences with them?
