Hoosier returns as title sponsor!

Hoosier Racing Tire returns to the US Formula 1000 Championship in a three year agreement as title sponsor that will see the Championship renamed as The Hoosier Tire US Formula 1000 Championship.

The agreement calls for both cash and contingency prizes to be awarded at each race event with cash prize payouts to be announced at a later date. Per-race contingency prizes will remain as they were in 2013 with 20 tires awarded per weekend as long as there are a minimum of 10 entries per race.

Per-race contingency prizes are as follows:

  • 1st-4 tires

  • 2nd-2 tires

  • 3rd-1 tire

  • Pole position-1 tire

  • There will also be two tires awarded in random drawings among non-podium finishers at each race.

If there are less than 10 cars entered the tire contingency award will be 10 tires per weekend with contingency awarded as follows:

  • 1st-2 tires

  • 2nd-1 tires

  • Pole position-1 tire

  • There will also be two tires awarded in random drawings among non-podium finishers at each race.

As in 2013, the overall 2014 US Formula 1000 Championship driver will win a tire program from Hoosier for the 2015 season. Should the 2014 champion also win the SCCA National Runoffs in FB the national championship prize will take precedent.

As part of this agreement, Hoosier tire will be the only tire permitted but any Hoosier size and compound can be used in 2014. To help reduce costs to competitors, Hoosier has agreed to work with the series admins and drivers to develop a spec tire for 2015 and 2016.

To be eligible for the Hoosier Tire contingency award and cash prizes drivers must be registered with the series and display both a Hoosier patch on their uniform and three Hoosier decals on their car in locations to be specified by the series

Fuel Bladder trash after 7 years

Has anybody ever seen a bladder look this bad after 7 years? I know that they do not last the life of the car, but this after 7 years? Neil Porter has stood on his head trying to get me some sort of adjustment from the manufacturer. Any adjustments are coming voluntarily from Neil.

We are told that heat and moisture are what did this in. You would think that the foam would have given up first!

Now I don't know if I want another bladder made by this material or process again. Not unless someone did not follow a process.

FE

I had purchased an FE late last year. I own a few other race cars and only bought it because I thought it was a lot of car for 25K. I raced it this weekend at PBIR. What a cool little car.

For the money, I think it's tough to beat. I am curious what the number of cars on the track is so few?

Receiver Extension for Camper

I just bought a small camper to use in my Ford F-250 tow vehicle, and now I need a solution for extending out the receiver hitch so I can haul the race car trailer behind. It seems like there are a lot of products on the market that provide 18" extension on a 2" receiver, but I seem to need a little more, about 21". Torklift has a product called their "Supertruss" extension, which has options up to 48", but seems to require their own, receiver (Superhitch), which is added expense I would hope to avoid.

Any advice from the group on which products I should be looking, and how I can tackle this problem, would be most appreciated?

Thanks

2014 Schedule

I was looking at the F1200 site today and noticed in the schedule section that the 2013 schedule is still there. I was just wondering how we go about posting an update for this years schedule?

Atlanta Public Service Announcement

With only a little over a week to go before load-in, and considering many workers and crew in the paddock are of more advanced age, having witnessed the changes that have occurred over 4 or 5 decades of racing, I feel it is very important to put some word out early so as to prevent possible shock, stroke, or heart attacks on pit lane.

Team Weitzenhof, (known as DaveW to Apexspeeders) has purchased and installed the newest digital radios into their operation.

Much like third world nations that have leap-froged from no telephone service straight into cell phones, Dave (engineer that he is) never thought radio technology over the past 40 years had technically developed enough to fit the high standards of Weitzenhof Racing. Now with the newest digital technology in place, he has stepped forward, thus skipping wasting money on all the previous iterations.

I have personally seen the car and helmet installation. So, this story is real. (notice it is March 31, not April 1) The installation is very professionally done. Obviously folks in Bath Ohio do not face the distractions of having to go fishing/boating a lot during the last few months as those of us in Florida, so time to do a professional install is readily available between running the snow blower.

To further heighten the impact of this change, Weitzenhof racing has developed a race channel monitor that will broadcast the control channel over speakers withinin their compound.

To pile on the weight of this shocking development, Dave has retired the worlds loudest portable generator, and purchased a new quiet unit. Another sure sign of the rapidly approaching apocalypse.

It has been reported the team's head statistician and timer, Sherrie, is taking a course on radio transmission technique.

When Dave was worrying about the exact position for the push-to-talk button his spotter remarked, "Dave, it's not a big deal, I expect you won't be using it much."

Immediately Dave replied, "We'll see about that!"

WTB: Used Tires in PA, W. NY, Ohio, Virignia

I need a few decent sets of FE tires (7x13 fronts and 10x13 rears). These are to be used on a Vintage DSR in vintage racing. They don't have to be amazing, but they do have to have enough meat to be grooved as the vintage organization will requires this.

I will pay based upon condition and age. I am looking for three or four sets. I prefer that they are in Ohio, Western New York, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia. Basically anywhere that is an easy drive from Pittsburgh. The more sets of tires you have for me to get in one trip the better.

F-1000 for sale

Is there a for sale section on this forum for FB cars?

If so please advise how and where to list it for sale.

I am selling the 2007 Phoenix prototype F-1000 which is powered by a 2007 GSXR 1000.

I also have a complete spare 2007 GSXR 1000, starter, modified wiring harness, ECU

Both wiring harness's by GDRE.

Oil pans on both engines by Phoenix/Edge engineering (Gary Hickman).

Aim GPS dash.

Lithium battery.

2 sets Phoenix center lock wheels.

Prototype body work is very functional but does not have the close up fit and finish of production body parts.

Ohlin shocks by the Shock Shop.

No damage in the 5 years I have owned the car and as far as I know it was never damaged while Phoenix used it as a prototype.

This chassis had a very successful past with National caliber drivers and has been a very reliable adrenalin junkies fix at the regional level in Portland.

Total proceeds from sale will go to charity.

Thanks for advising.

I have no idea what to ask for it.

Bondurant West track April

All Open wheel cars are invited to join the yellow group racing at Bondurant West Track on April 12/13. There will be four sessions per day. Practice, qualifying, then a qualifying race that determines the starting grid for the feature race both days. 20 minutes each. Any open wheel car welcome. EFF (EuroFormulaFord) must be on either Toyo R888 or the Yokahama equivalent, to earn points. The Formula Fords are practicing and learning on the tires that will be the pro tires next year. We are hoping to match our 25 car starting grid that we had in January. You may bring any FF and use any tire you want, but EFF points are only given on the spec tires....We have had everything from FV to IndyCars, all are welcome.

Come on CA guys, 300.00 for 8 on track sessions !!!

MV Destroys Laguna FV Qualifying Record

Disclaimer, all unofficial, just got this off Race Monitor:

Michael Varacins just finished up qualifying out at the Laguna Seca SRF Regional going on this weekend.

The old qualifying record was held by Randy Harris and has stood since 1996. Per the SFR website, that time was 1:43.878. In this last qualifying session, MV blew this record away by 1.1 seconds!

I'm sure it will be made official soon enough, but Race Monitor posted a blistering 1:42.728! The next FV back was Skip Streets who posted a 1:45.2

Congratulations to Michael!

Water Nightmare

We are doing the first fire up on a Merlyn Mk 29 we have been restoring. The engine will not stop overheating. The radiators are in the back along the side of the engine and are connected by a pipe that runs over the top. There is a hole in the top of the pipe which connects to a tube which, in turn, connects to the top of the expansion tank. When we disconnect that tube the temp holds around 200, but when it is connected it shoots up over 240. Does anybody have any experience with this? We think it is an air pocket forming in the system but cannot work out how to get it out.

Any ideas?

Any idea on where results are posted for the FC race?

Anti-Dive Anti-Squat

Never too old to learn -

My older vintage cars (all formula cars) have so-called "radius rods" at the rear - from a geometry point of view they are wide-based A-arms - and they provide significant and adjustable anti-squat - see significantly 'sloping' radius rods in the pic. Similar but less pronounced anti-dive at the front.

My more modern cars - post 1990 - have real A-arms with fixed and parallel attachment points - in other words no anti-dive, no anti-squat. What happened? Did the science change? Is it no longer important? Maybe stiffer suspensions made it redundant in designers' minds? Do any modern cars have any a-d or a-s and is it adjustable - probably with shims?

Yes - I have re-read Carroll Smith on the subject - written about same time as my older cars were built. I understand the theory but don't understand the design philosophy drift.

Thx - Derek

Is the 1991 Lola Champ Car Full Carbon?

Hello Everyone,

I know that CART allowed Full Carbon cars for the 1991 Season. Do any of you know if the 1991 Lola was a full Carbon Car? If not, when did Lola change their Champ Car/Indy Car Chassis to Full Carbon?

Just curious, so I thought I would ask the pros.

Lowest curing temperature for Permatex Ultra GRey

Hi:

We're having an exceptionally cold and long winter up here in Winnipeg, Canada. I have an insulated garage, but I just heat it when I'm working in it (don't trust the electric heater). I don't want to leave the heat overnight and can't guarantee the temperatures will stay higher than 0C overnight.

I've been putting off to reassemble a transmission due to the low temperatures (and low ambient humidity) which seem to delay the curing of Permatex Ultra Grey.

Looking at the forecast it seems I won't be getting positive temperatures for another week... So I need to get going.

Looking at the technical datasheet, there's no specification on lowest curing temperature. It just specifies that "Longer cure times will apply to applications in low humidity conditions or colder temperatures."

The environmental resistance is specified to as low as -54C but there's no specific minimum curing temperature.

Has anybody experienced bad curing due to low temperatures? If so, how low was it?

Thanks,

Jean

85 RT5 brake rotors

Hi,

I am putting the front suspension back together now on the RT5 I am rebuilding.

The brakes were obviously upgraded for FA specs. I have reconditioned the 4 pot calipers (AP-3228) by separating the halves, cleaned out, new seals, cross over pipe, etc.

I am now wanting to replace the front brake rotors. Does anyone have any part numbers for an off the shelf item that would be suitable? even if needing some modification.

Doing some research, it looks like an AP rotor (CP2222-273) may fit. Does anyone have any experience on this?

I have attached a couple of photos of progress thus far.

Any suggestions you can offer would be appreciated.

Regards

Ricky.
