Denise and I were returning from the Eglin AFB Commissary this afternoon, when we came unto this. The driver, a retired O-6 (full Colonel) pilot, was out for a joy ride but I tend to believe he was looking for targets of opportunity.
I pulled up next to him at the next light, rolled down my window and asked: "Colonel, you ready for'em'.
He smiled and replied: "You bet'cha".
Both my Dad and Stepdad told me of their reaction to Pearl Harbor, and how the entire country mobilized immediately. Although with great humility and without bravado, they told me of their combat participation in WWII. My Stepdad was a Navy tail gunner flying off the USS Manila Bay and USS Prince William carriers. My Dad was Army Infantry in the South Pacific. They were indeed the Greatest Generation, and somehow, we have managed to squander everything they sacrificed for.
