In 1978 when I started to race FF in a Lotus 61, there were Good~Year (Lauderdale Auto Marine Service in Ft Lau) and Firestones (Bobby Johns in Miami).
After a review of the tires, the type of circuits we ran, PBIR -Sebring, Daytona, Gainesville, Savannah and Road Atlanta, later WPB Fairgrounds and Miami Hollywood Speedway, it seemed the wider surface Good~Year rears better served the program (despite the GOOD showing at Daytona with the narrower rear tire Firestones) and I committed to running Good~Years from then on - "... Go Go Good~Year "
Made a great deal with the Shelton Brothers [Lola 440s then Crossle 35s] to buy one race used tires from them ( ... they were really helping a young racer out !) I even promoted some Pro FF race with spec Good~Years R240s in 1980 at Miami Hollywood.
From the 61, the Royale RP16a, Van Diemen RF82 to the Swift db-1 I/we have remained loyal to Good~Year ! Except for the off spec tire race in F1600 I/we have run nothing else.
At the end of 2013 I learned that Good~Year had "dropped" the R160 FF tires from the product line and Jason and I decided to offer to buy the remaining sets, nationally, and at a reduced price - we were successful in the program and purchased all the remaining sets (Good~Year actually destroyed some sets in the warehouse as scrap!)
This weekend will see the use of our "Last Set Of Good~Years" Formula F Tires.
I discussed the matter of a spec tire with Good~Year/Bryce Jones but he had "zero interest" absent an order of a "large number of "R600s"
So then - the Final Chapter, the Curtain closes and "Bye Bye Good~Year....." :checkered:
