Essentially you are all on your own as to gearing a FF or anything else for Thompson.
That is due to the fact I just experienced the single worst weekend racing I have had in 46 years of open wheel driving.
I actually started at Thompson in 1968, that was the third version of Thompsons road courses, last weekend the freshly finished fourth version.
Over 3 days and 5 sessions I managed to complete approximately 3 laps at speed with a total of 13 laps including out and in laps.
If I had experienced a weekend like this pre-1970 I never would have continued !
And I am blaming it all on two factors.
The first being my own stupidity, as is often the case, as my lack of mechanical preparation has once and for all bitten me hard in the ass.
The second, and it is attached to my stupidity and laziness , is ETHANOL.
After running the Runoffs last September and driving the Crossle/Fit back into the trailer I put it in the shop and pretty much ignored it as all attention was focused on the Brabham BT40.
Then 9 months later drag it out and off to Thompson I go fat dumb and happy.
Meanwhile the few gallons of Rd Am bought 98 octane unleaded was working its worse. No, I hadn't "pickled" the car/motor/cell, nothing.
So the motto is, if you choose to use that crappy pump 93 octane unleaded be aware, it deteriorates pretty quickly and is really bad for things like cells and injectors and fuel lines and lord knows what else. Either run an ethanol free unleaded or pickle the thing. I guess if it is being run every month or so it might be ok but I ain't gonna risk it.
In fact I today going to empty the chainsaw as the last time I heard its dulcet tones was maybe within the last year, but maybe not
Yes yes, Stabil or other such gas stabilizer/conditioner and there are numerous brands are likely to do the trick but after last weekend I am so risk adverse I am going the way of an ethanol free life, as much as I can at least.
I am in the process of shotgunning the car, a process sure to result in parts being discarded that are perfectly usable and others that should be condemned to the trash being dragged around as spares just waiting to torture me again. Hence, it all gets pitched. If I cannot absolutely 100% be sure said part id ok then it is junk.
The result of all this is I really have no clear idea of what ratios I could recommend with any degree of confidence.
Add to that the fact that this Crossle is Fit powered and has a 13-36 R&P and ratios I might have garnered would certainly mathematical efforts to turn into useful numbers for the usual FF with a 9-31 or 10-31 and more than 6,800 rpm available,
One thing I will say, my 4 speed gearing I run at LRP is not the way to go !
Top to high and 1st to high [I run first in big bend through to the entrance to no-name as Eddie said and get smoked on slow starts or restarts].
On one's initial laps the track seems "busy" but the flow is good, the slow corners are really not that slow and there are numerous lines that will likely result in surprise passes
and interesting approaches.
And if there is a better passing zone than braking into Turn 1 you'd need to be at Summit Point to find it.
