I don't know if this has ever been mentioned here before, but I thought some might find it useful
While trying to find a source for my RF89 Van Diemen's starter motor (Bosch part number 0 001 112 016 from a whole bunch of early/mid 80s English Ford products), I came across this site:
Wilson Auto Electric
Their eCatalog seems to be able to take a part number for almost any starter made by anyone, and provide you with the numbers for every other manufacturer who might be able to supply the part.
In my case, "0 001 112 016" returned more than 20 different manufacturers as well as applications for things I would never have thought of (e.g. Toro lawn equipment).
