Thompson Speedway Gearing
Straight at Thompson is 3000 ft. For comparison Watkins Glen straight is 2600 ft, Summit Point straight is 3000 ft, VIR straights are 3000 ft and 4000 ft. In looking at the most recent video of a car driving Thompson a few weeks ago the very tight turn (4), a 160 deg right hander does not look as tight, or as slow, as turns 5 and 6 at Summit Point. THOUGHTS ON GEARING?
Look at the track map on the web sight and and some videos. Have any of you driven the track?

Gearing/Top Speeds
Anyone have suggested gearing for NJMS Thunder? And to extend the question, I have the gearing spreadsheet but does anyone have a set of expected top speeds for the east coast tracks - NJMS, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, Pocono (new setup), NHMS, VIR, Nelson, Thompson (guesses)?
Any help would be appreciated.

Crane LX 92 Coil and petronix
Hi all.
I have removed the MSD ignition box from my FF and changed it to a legal type petronix unit. The question I have is can I use the Crane LX 92 coil that is on the car with the petronix unit and no MSD box.

For Sale 1972 Lola T204 time capsule
Hi everyone I am just finishing up this very nice original 1972 Lola and would like to sale the car.

Bertside Auto purchased it and completely disassembled it, cleaned and painted the frame, dissembled the

VIR Thread
VIR has produced some insane FF races in the past few years - like Goughary winning by inches in 2011 or Starrantino's double last lap passes last year

1971 Caldwell D9B project
Well I really hate to do this, I have run out of time and space to work on this.
The car is a Caldwell D9B (on the serial tag) chassis number 72010076
It came out of upstate PA, I'm not sure exactly how much history it has prior to the early 90's, when it had a different body on it.
The car is missing the bodywork and radiator, but was a running car doing hill climbs 3 years ago and has been sitting in the corner of a shop since then.
So far I have found a few people that can make a set of bodywork for the car.
For the radiator I figured having one custom made would be the way to go, I have a drawing and a quote from Griffin rad for a full aluminum unit for $575
I do have a log book for the car, it only dates back to about 91 though.
And at that point in time it had a set of bodywork on it that was far from original Caldwell parts (from the pics)
I have the car,
spare set of steel wheels with OLD rains.
another set of steel wheels
a box of spare suspension pieces, engine bay brace, and oil cooler mount
the original rear sway bar for the car( not on it currently)
a block, crank head, and box of oddball engine spares(not sure exactly what is all there)
I also have with the car
New engine cover, grey primer
Rear uprights with stub axles, bearings calipers and rotors
few other misc parts
and a huge box of FF1600 Kent engine parts gaskets seals and other assorted items. (this is SOO MUCH its crazy)
I have a log book with the car as well. Only dating back to about 91 though.
there are also some spare gear sets, though I think some are well used. about 7 total
it is in need of a restoration, and has a few small issue spots on the frame that need attention. Mainly the front is the problem, the bodywork mount and front cross bar are damaged. At the rear there is one crack in a weld at the shock mount.
Otherwise it will need a new pan, which would be part of the restoration.
Here is the Photobucket album of the car and its pieces.
http://ift.tt/1wBmGXu
So far I know the radiator would be $575, and the remaining parts of the bodywork should be about $2000.
I have seen these cars for high teens, so it is definitely worth putting back together, I had all intentions too. And will if this doesn't go to a new home.
As for asking price, this I am not sure of.
does $6500 seem fair
Talk to me, I'm not going to give it away though.

Dry Sump Pan Help
Hi. In viewing this picture of Jerry B's of the dry sump pan I see the tube going all the way through. Is the bottom of the tube cut out for the oil pick up to be pulled to the pump or what. I am fabricating my own pan and need to know what is common practice. Is there just a hole in the side of the pan with the tube welded in it which goes to the pump? Thanks for any help. Graham.
General Questions
I haven't yet bought a F500 I am considering buying one as my goal is to run in the Runoffs, when it comes to Mid-Ohio. I am a bigger gentleman at 6'2" 230lbs, I am built like a football player with broad shoulders and big legs.
The past 14 years has been a combination of mainly running karts Kt100, Clone, Rotax/Tag, and Briggs. Mixed with HPDE through NASA and a driver school or two.
So fundamentally it seems as the F500 would make more mechanical sense to me rather then going car racing.
I have a few questions, is F500 still a national class? Thoughts on a Rotax engine? I ran one in karting and like that it was sealed very reliable when compared to other tag/125cc engines, easy to work on, does that hold true in F500?
I live in Erie, Pa so the closes tracks that I would be interested in would be Pitt (beaverun), Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, Nelson Ledges (if still open) does anybody run at those tracks?
I read the Faq page in the forum and it suggests to look at F500.org, but it does not look like it has been updated since 2006, so are there any good resources?

want to convert a f440 to f600 for autocross
I have a KBS MK 4 with a Kawasaki 440 that I want to convert.
Anybody got any leads on a F600 motor? Most interested in reliability over perfromance.
More interested in fun than being uber-competitive and I am only interested in autocrossing this so I don't need the latest motor - any 03 or later Suzuki GSXR 600.
Any tips, tricks or advice would be appreciated.

What range of jets...
...and other bits do I need for my carburetor?
At least to begin with.
As of right now, my RF89 is running pretty well. The carburetor was prepared by a good friend of mine who's been running his own FF for a long time, and other than the fact that I get a fair amount of popping and crackling on overrun, I'd say the engine is strong.
But I'm looking to improve it of course.
So I'm planning a dyno session for next week. We'll warm it up, get a baseline, then start looking at the AFR. Once that's right (or as right as we can get it), we'll work on the timing, then go back and re-examine AFR.
To that end, I'm going to want to bring along some additional jets, etc. for my carb. Only, I don't own any yet. So my first thought was simply to dig into the carb and see what is in there currently, then buy two or three sizes up and down from there.
But I'd also value the input of others.
What range of jets do you think you actually need for an FF?
What about the various types: main jets, air jets, emulsion tubes, (idle jets?)?
Is it advisable to have duplicates of some (or all) sizes so that you can run the same jets for both primary and secondary?
As always, all thoughts gratefully received.

Formula BMW vs Formula Enterprise
Hello all, been a lurker on this forum.
First post, would like to get some fellow knowledgeable racers to enlighten me on this subject.
Last year I had the opportunity to learn and drive FE cars at Bridgestone Academy, did a race licence course in the mechanics program. Thought those were a blast to drive, despite using 2.3l old school Mazda pick up engine.
Recently, I found a team who runs former racing Formula BMWs for training. I thought about testing (at my own expense of course). I always thought the cf tub chassis was pretty cool and seems like a more advanced chassis compare to the tubular FE but probably a slower formula due to the motorcycle engine.
My question is the BMW cars much different from the Enterprises? Am I missing much?
I am just interested in trying out a cf tub and perhaps the lower power might be more manageable as a training tool for a newbie.
Much thanks in advance.

So I now have the Kubota alternator on the car. but previously ran a Denso. The wiring loom was modified such the original 2 pin connector that would have gone to the Kubota was discarded. I know the Kubota has one sense wire and one output wire. The connector on the alternator is marked A and B, but which one is which. The Swift wiring loom schematic indicates the same, but with no connector, I dont know which is which. Couldnt find and wiring diagram for the Kubota. Any ideas? I know I can experiment, but just thought I would ask.
Thanks !!
Thanks !!
Nelson Ledges/ FLR Westward Ho! is a GO!
Just wanted to make everyone who is interested aware that the FLR Westward Ho! event is going forward as scheduled.
According to a FLR source I have spoken with, the track is currently undergoing some repairs to make it suitable for racing again.
There are very few entries overall right now, but 7 Vee's are currently registered and no other classes are registered in our group. So in essence at this time we have our own defacto group. Even if they get entries from other classes, I think if we can show up in force we have a very good chance of racing by ourselves for the weekend.
So now that the cloud has lifted - get that entry in! The more Vee's entered the better our negotiating position will be, so if you are on the fence about attending, now is the time to pull the trigger.
And Steve, you were right on about the karma!

Fit ECU failure
My 2 month old FIT ECU failed on pregrid at the Seattle majors event. As I happen to be a design engineer, I checked it out and found that the failure was caused by incomplete soldering of the processor.
Honda won't even look at it and wants me to buy another ECU for $1200 and suggests that I carry a spare.
In modern electronics, this kind of failure is simply not acceptable. If Honda doesn't care enough about reliability to do failure analysis, I think SCCA needs to seriously reconsider our relationship with the company.

Weber DFV?
I'm wondering if anyone has one of these earlier Weber carbs prepped for FF lying around that they might want to sell? I want this carb just so I can use a period cast velocity stack which won't fit the DGV.
Thanks!

What is the impact of 50lbs in these cars?
Myself in the Farley-Kent-powered Piper at the end of a race is around 1150lbs. (eek!).
Last majors at Blackhawk, I was on track cars that were all around 1100... If I can keep up with an 1100lbs Honda power, what will losing 50lbs do?
How much difference is that 50lbs? I can gather acceleration, but what about cornering? Anyone ever have a night and day moment where you added or took off 20-50lbs or such and have some measurements?
I'm around 200lbs and 6'4ish.. So I can lose 20 probably..
Aluminum head would lose 19lbs...
My rear bodywork is 17lbs, where the other pipers are around 5-7.. So thinking about making up a new one..
Would all that be worth it? $2k for a head, another $500-750 for bodywork.. and my beer drinking and mexican food habits death for my 20lbs..
thoughts?

Another all vee event!!!
I've been approached with the opportunity for vees to participate in the 45th Formula Ford Anniversary Festival weekend at the fabulous Barber Motorsports Park on August 9th and 10th of 2014. It will be a SCCA sanctioned and insured festival two day weekend that will include a 20 minute practice; 20 minute qualifying and a sprint race on Saturday and a morning warmup and feature race on Sunday. It will award points towards the nationwide points championship and the entry fee will be $495.
In addition to the track time, entrants will receive two tickets to the Sat. night banquet and a discounted pass to the amazing museum located at the track.
Like before, we are asking folks to go to Motorsports Reg. and express their interest. here's link:
http://ift.tt/1pybvdC
This track is on my bucket list and if you have never checked it out do so. SCCA does not run there very often and this is a great opportunity.
I need to let the organizers know by June 6th so don't delay in showing your interest.

GLC at Grattan June 28-29
The next in the GLC series of races (#3, #4) for Ford powered FC and CFC will be happening the end of June at Grattan Raceway near Grand Rapids, MI.
This is a double Regional, and is always well supported by the GLC series competitors.
Registration is open now (some wait until the last minute) with our CFC competitor David Rock being the first to enter, of any group.
If you have not run this track before, you are missing what I like to refer to as a roller coaster ride.
Contact me if you have any questions regarding Grattan or the GLC series, I'd be glad to help.

SVRA at Indy-Tow hook?
I am excited to be running next weekend just down the street at IMS. I have never run with SVRA so I've been reading the Supps pretty closely. For those of you running this event, did you read this?:
Tow Hooks/Straps
Every car for this event must have at least a Front Tow-Hook or on-board strap to facilitate at least flat towing should the need arise. Strap around the roll bar is NOT adequate.
I had not heard of such a thing for open-wheel cars and I thought maybe it was a mistake. I contacted the tech guy who said this rule was in place due to previous roll overs while towing. He went on to reply:
Solution- All the SVRA legal FF have a hook built on the frame, or the driver carries inside the car an axle tie down strip he waives at the corner worker doing the hook up to which he gives directions. Some cars have the strap zip tied in place.
I am looking forward to seeing these FF tow hooks, but meanwhile I am interested in comments from the Apex community on this rule.

spider breakkage
This weekend was running at BIR. During qualifying put out a HUGE cloud of smoke that was referred to by other racers as "spectacular". Got back to pits and found there was oil out the back of the engine and it looks like the majority is from the left side almost to the front of the engine. From a quick look I did not see a hole in the braided line from the cooler to the front of the engine. Is there a typical problem point the oil comes from? Also had the top two legs of the spider break about 3" up from the bolt in points. The breaks were relatively clean and across the tube with no buckling. Almost like it was cut. Thought it was an odd place to break. Is there a typical reason these break?
Was hoping to learn some more from the community so I can prevent (if possible) in the future.

What should I bring to a dyno session.
I'm arranging a dyno session for my FF next week, and I'd like to have the right parts on hand to make adjustments.
In particular, I only have whatever jets came in the carburetor from the previous owner. Can anyone tell me what the range of sizes of the various jets (and other carburetor parts) I should have with me?
The car is running pretty well as it sits, so would a couple of sizes up and down from what I've got be enough? Do I need more of some jets and not so many of others?
Also, what other parts should I bring? I'm already going to bring spare spark plugs and also some lighter oil (to see what I might be giving away for HP), but what else?
Any and all thoughts...
...other than anyone who tells me, "just take it to Ivey"...
...are very welcome.

race prep
I'm new to Formula racing and in the market for a club/vintage FF.
I'm interested in what some of you do for race prep between races. In other words, how many hours of prep should I plan for between races and what does that normally encompass?
Thanks in advance!

Aaron Ellis' Wife
She is on a transplant list. This means that Aaron can be no further than 2 hours away from home. Thus, he can not race at all. His F500 is sitting there ready to go so I am sure that someone in need can work out a rental deal with him. In the meantime, keep Aaron and his family in your prayers. He does NOT know that I have done this so if you contact him(ellismtsprts@aol.com) be prepared to say that you saw this thread if you are the first to contact him.
I am sure that whatever the community can do to help will be much appreciated.

Hey Jay!
You would certainly appreciate this:
My sister Karin and her husband Tom came down from Dearborn this weekend with their camper and stayed at a nice park just west of Terre Haute. This morning my wife and I joined them at the park to have breakfast and then see them off. About 50 minutes later I got a text message from Karin that read, "What's the best way to get around Indy?" My reply was, "Turn left 800 times, don't turn right."
Not terribly helpful, but how many guys have a sister who would think that's funny?
Hope you had a good Memorial Day!

Race optics video, On-Board Video Tech Mount
I think this a great video set up but I just don't use it much so it's up for sale.
Race Optics Full HD video camera and recorder. Records on San Disc for easy input to your computer. On-Board Video Tech aluminum roll bar mount made by Greg Pizzo's On-Board Video Tech company (Velocity Haus Engineering Brand). I've had it for a couple years, works perfectly, everything from the original packaging is included plus a couple San Discs. The anodize on the camera and the mount are a little faded from the sun but that's the only indication that it isn't new. I did tweak the diameter of the roll bar mount to make it easier to install, it's easy to bolt on and is absolutely rock solid.

nice interview with Tony Cotman and Dan Anderson about the new car. Nicely done, kinda looks like a Swift FA in the back, a Stohr in the middle, and an older Ferrari F1 car in the front.

Flat bottom steering wheel
Started a new topic 'cos I didn't want to spoil a previous one.
But what's the advantage of a flat bottom steering wheel?
I can see getting more room in the straight ahead position but as soon as you turn the wheel those 'corners' are going to hit whatever part of your anatomy you were trying to protect.
Curious.

Attach Hewland Mk9 to a Crossle Guide
Good timing on this. I pulled the engine a Hewland Mk9 after a race in April when started pushing oil out the breather (eg. quarts). I had the rebuild by Quicksilver and had the case replaced and rebuilt by Williams Racing Components. I have the engine back in and want to get the Hewland back in. I've spent time trying. I remember a "twist" coming out but the only thing that is twisting at the moment is my back.
Can someone offer the step by step guide? I've spent the day working on the car, recording Indy. Ironically, it's because I need to get this back together by next weekend to go to the SVRA Brickyard vintage race. Thanks

Removing rotors from rear uprights
Hello there folks. I am in mid restoration of my Ensign LNF3. I am about to send out parts for crack checking. I must be dumb as for the life of me I cannot seem to remove the rotors (and stub axles) from my rear uprights. The front face of the rotor has a round plate to which the wheel studs pass through and then are captured by the rotor. It appears that there isnt a way to remove rotors with the uprights on the car which seems strange to me.
It looks to me like a press job from the rear to press out the stub axle. But since these uprights are pretty much unobtainium I want to be sure of what I am doing before I put these in a press.
Any help is appreciated!
Eric

Kerblammi!!!!
So is it Kerblammi or Kerblammo, we still have two to go, Rodge n Chip gonna duke it out n don't forget Mike, has a formidable effort, n the Billies, will close out the show (say that with love of course, not too much mind you!!!!)
Stock Honda Fit Motor
I have a stock 2013 Honda Fit motor for sale. It was removed from a car that was rear ended the day after it was purchased! It only has 64 miles on it and looks like a new crate motor. No flywheel or starter but otherwise complete. It cost me $1200 and I'd like $1000 for it. That's a 1/3 of the new HPD cost and ideal as a spare motor. My plan was to build up an FF but it won't fit in my chassis so I'm looking at other options!

Flat Wall Mount Style Tire Rack
Since I am reconfiguring my trailer, I have some extra tire mounts that I am not going to use. I designed these with convenience in mind, so I think my fellow racers will appreciate!
Since I no longer will have room to mount them all in my trailer (I'm putting in a fold down bed!), these are for sale. I mounted one set in my trailer (see pic...please excuse the mess!).
-For 2.25" Centerlock rims, FF, FC, ect
-Overall length is 7.5", with multiple holes for fronts, rears, or transport wheels.
-NO messing with screwing on a nut....just pop on the pin!
-The retaining disc is foam padded, to protect those expensive wheels
-Mounting plate has multiple holes....follow your trailer MFG recommendations for mounting....but you would have plenty of mounting options!
-Powder coated gloss black
$300 for a set of four, shipped in the USA.
Thanks,
Jim

help, only 2 psi of oil pressure
first off. car was in perfect order last season other than some leaks, which lead to pulling the engine.
after getting everything back together and getting oil into it we added enough oil so that its being pulled from the oil pan and being returned to the reservoir , this thing is basically drowning in oil right now
however we still show only 2psi of oil pres. (cranking the engine or not) , and when we pull the pressure sender line off there is no flow of oil when cranking the engine
i'm stumped .
i missing something simple or the sender is bad
its a pace 5 port pump
any thoughts?

Ld 200 gearbox oil
Hi guy's,
Can anyone give me the oil type and quantity that is required in the LD 200 ?
I read somewhere that it is around 1 1/2 quarts of 75-90 GL-5..Is this correct ?
Are there 2 compartments.. one at the diff and one at the rear gear housing ? or does the main filler plug at the diff supply the whole box ?
Thanks
Tom

Arai Helmets
Hi,
I've been looking at various places to buy a new Arai GP6 helmet and have found the least expensive are on ebay from Japanese sellers.
Is there any reason not to buy from these sellers, the price difference is not trivial? Could these helmets not be marked correctly for use in the US?
Has anyone else had any experience with buying from these sellers - that they'd admit too?!
Thanks,
Ian
