Gearbox gremlins, and other mythical maladies

Okay, so in my post below, I alluded to the fact that the transaxel hadn't been off the DB-1 since I got it 20 years ago. I guess it was just karma, but when I went to reassemble the box, I noticed that the drawbolt, which normally spins in by hand with no real resistance, needed a screwdriver to thread into place. It wasn't really stiff, just different than before. It was that way when I took it apart, now that I think of it. The car ran fine prior to the gearchange, and except for the 3 to 2 downshift, it shifted fine. Spinning the nuts with and without the gears being engaged, sounds and feels like normal. So, any ideas as to why the drawbolt tension seems to have changed? Any idea if running the car is likely to cause damage? Changing gears and clutches is about the limit of my gearbox knowledge base, so any help would be appreciated.
