Thank you for everything John Melvin

I was reported late today that John Melvin, initially of GM and later Wayne State University has passed away.

Although portrayed in the media as a "NASCAR Safety Pioneer", Mr. Melvin was involved with motorsports safety long before NASCAR started taking a more active role in 2001.

Melvin was part of most of the motorsports safety research over the past two decades. While he did not invent head and neck restraints, he was integral to the testing and evaluation of many systems.

Having heard John speak at a Detroit Region SCCA meeting in probably about 2002 or 2003, I can assure all of you his interest in safety extended to the club racing level.

Our lives are all better because of his work.
