Since the term has been tossed around a bit on another thread and some panties wadded, I wondered why is it considered an insult? Not that I ever accused any party on that thread of sand bagging.
Sand bagging isn't cheating, I don't even consider it bad sportsmanship. I consider it part of good race craft, especially when looking bigger picture.
Do you show up at every race with a fresh engine and start every track session on new stickers? No, you show up with equipment you hope to be good enough to reach your goals. It is rarely your best.
Do you make every attempt at a pass that's thrown your way or do you sometimes find it more prudent to show some patience? How is that not sand bagging ? Going slower than you are able to go now and faster later when it counts?
When you are leading a race by a margin you are comfortable with do you continue to drive on the razors' edge risking life, limb and equipment....or do you back off just a bit to maintain the gap? Don't back off too much though as that's when mistakes are made. ;)
