For Immediate Release Hope Victorious for Sixth Time, Claims Series Championship Fontana, Calif. (October 18, 2015) – Tom Hope came to Fontana with one goal in mind, to win races and win the championship. He did this on Sunday in the final round of the Pacific Formula F2000 Championship Series presented by Primus Racing Parts and Pirelli Tires at Auto Club Speedway when he passed the ailing Van Diemen of Peter West on lap four and went on to claim his second victory of the weekend.
The race was held on the 2.88 mile infield road course at Auto Club Speedway in conjunction with the California Sports Car Club’s (CalClub) Pacific Coast Road Racing Championships.
There was an 8:45 am morning warm up which was led by Peter West prior to the field being gridded for the 1:15 pm race. Starting positions determined by the fastest lap of either Saturday’s qualifying or race. This put Ira Fierberg, #27, Sparco, Injury Law, LDF Pro Fitness, The Yard, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen on the pole with his qualifying time of 1 minute 42.156 seconds. Second place again went to Tom Hope, #18, Dart, Primus Racing Parts, H+M Racing Van Diemen, who though improved on his qualifying during the race, was unable to eclipse Fierberg. The second row was filled out by the DFR teammates Peter West, #99, Racing Optics, Kodenko Jeans, Malibu Health, Frank Monise Motors, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen and Tim De Silva, #21, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen followed by Harin De Silva, #96, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen, Connor Funk, #97, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen and John Fabijanic, #69, Piper DF5. Robert Armington, #11, Firestone 805, Audioengine, Tomasi Motorsports Van Diemen and Sterling Ellsworth, #22, That’s My Juice Racing, LLC Van Diemen were both unable to start due to mechanical issues.
After the pace lap the initial start was aborted and the field obliged to take another lap at pace car speed and when the green flag did finally wave it was Peter West announcing his presence and surging into the lead. Sadly it was a lead that lasted only two laps as the electrical problems of Saturday manifested themselves once again and at the beginning of the fourth lap he slowed and came to a halt ending his race and his season long run at the championship.
After the retirement of West, Tom Hope was exactly where he wanted to be, leading the race. Hope was followed by Fierberg and T. De Silva in close attendance, Funk, H. De Silva and Fabijanic. The positions were to remain the same throughout the race with the only change coming on the final lap with Harin De Silva getting by Connor Funk for fourth place.
Tom Hope with this victory, his sixth of the season, claims the 2015 championship and demonstrated what can be achieved by a small, one-car team with the extraordinary effort, determination and unwillingness to settle for second best.
Peter West though he retired from the race still finished a personal best of second place in the championship and has driven some of the finest races of his long career this season highlighted by his two victories and Master Class Championship.
Series Rookie Connor Funk had an outstanding rookie campaign finishing third in the championship only three points behind his teammate West and armed with a season under his belt looks forward next season for a run at the championship.
Ira Fierberg finished second and has been impressive in his return to the series claiming two poles and a fastest lap and finishes seventh in the championship having competed in only four races.
Tim De Silva finished third and for him it was his third podium appearance in four races claiming two victories this season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in an abbreviated rookie campaign and claims fourth in the championship.
Harin De Silva finished fourth and with it the Master Class win, finishes the season fifth in the standings.
John Fabijanic finished sixth on Sunday and with his sixth place finish on Saturday enjoyed a successful introduction to the Pacific Formula F2000 Championship Series.
