FM 2.0 (FM to FS conversion) Ideas

This thread is for those of you that are interested in options for your Formula Mazda/Formula Russell chassis other than the SCCA spec FM class. Constructive comments and ideas are welcomed. We are not interested in comments about how someone should sell their FM and move to another class or discuss how doing this creates two weak classes. We know. Thank you. We are focused on using the FM base setup and making modifications to create a fun, safe, good looking car that can run in FS. We also hope to run the car in other national racing than SCCA (NASA, PASA, etc.) As a matter o setting expectations, I think it is safe to assume that it will take six months to get most of this actually going and a full season to make any significant progress.

The items that have been brought up so far include:
1) New/updated body work/wings. This will include new stuff to bolt on to the existing "bolt pattern" so very little modification will be needed.
2) Engine/Trans package. This will be important as we move this discussion along. As it sits, the Hewland box cannot handle much more than 225 HP without significant problems. Since it is FS, we are not required to run a rev limiter or sealed motor. Fuel injected motors are also on the horizon. Apparently something has been tested in the past two years. We cannot assume this solution is any good so some of us will have to work on that for this racing season. As we progress, we will attempt agree on something that will be safe, cheap, and fun.
3) Tires. This one is simple. Pretty much anything is open here. Goodyear/Hoosier, 255, 430, 470, 475, etc. No tire rule but I propose we ultimately plan on enforcing a four tires per weekend rule like they do for most SCCA races in our spec FM class.
4) Governing. Again, we will all run as FS doing whatever we want but we hope to set up some sort of rules to live by when the time is appropriate. The desire is to operate openly and not be forced to buy parts from specific vendors and utilize existing SCCA resources for rules. No one person will make the rules.
5) Costs to all of this will be a primary consideration. Collaboration of ideas and group testing will be welcomed. We do not intend to build an entirely new car but merely update the ones we have to be more competitive.

I think that about covers where we left off on the last thread. Again, if you are not fond of the idea please keep the flames to yourself.
