Twin Slave Batteries

What happens if you connect two 12v batteries in series? OK I know that - you get 24v.

What happens if you connect a really big and a very small battery in series? I guess you still get 24v - but what happens when you connect a load to them (like a starter motor)? Does anything drastic happen to either battery? Or do you just get a "stronger" start?

I ask because I saw someone doing that with a Hayabusa engine car yesterday. The guy claimed that 24v was necessary because the engine had 13:1 compression (but it was still only 1300cc). He claimed that the big battery provided the grunt and the small one the higher voltage. He also claimed that it was no problem for the starter motor since you only crank for a few seconds. His big battery was a conventional lead acid type you'd find in a big engined pickup, the small one a smaller-than-FF-size AGM.

I'd love to hear other people's reactions, comments, rebutals, recommendations etc. Is the big/small batterycombination better than, say, two medium size ones?

On my 13:1 4.3L V6 I use two SBS30 batteries connected in parallel to get a better start - would I be better connecting them in series?

Thx - Derek
