Floating rotors question

How 'free floating' should floating rotors be? I ask because I suspect over-torque led to rotor failure at my last track weekend, but as I carefully followed PFC procedure to install the new set, they aren't exactly 'loose'.

The PFC instructions say 10-12 ft-lbs on the bobbins. So I did that. The rotor felt pretty tight. So I backed them off and did 8 ft-lbs just to see. Feels about the same. The rotor will move, but only when nudged with a bump from my palm of my hand. Or a pretty good tug.

Is this normal? Or should they be much more free float, as in slide with very little effort? In order to achieve that, I have to remove pretty much all torque.

I am using a new 1/4" drive Husky torque wrench with inch-lbs settings, so I do not suspect I'm over-torqueing vs the PFC instructions.

Appreciate your time / thoughts / comments.

Spring Rates RF81

Just bought an RF81 that's converted to outboard suspension. What spring rates do I need? On my Crossle I ran 400 front 350 rear. The RF81 currently has 350 on the front and 450 on the rear which seem backwards to me. Also any setup tips on this car would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance to anyone will to help

1985 VanDiemen parts for sale.

1985 VanDiemen parts for sale.

I have probably 80-90% of the parts for a complete 1985 VanDiemen, minus the engine.
Good for spares or restoration.
There is one of everything except for a few bits and pieces.
I would like to sell the entire thing in one shot but will consider selling individual pieces.
Photos of every piece can be found here.
http://ift.tt/1FdP30a

The chassis is twisted and missing a few tubes but is definitely fixable. Unfortunately the chassis tag is missing. I was told that this chassis is from Paul Tracey's first formula car but I can't verify that.

I would like to get $3500US for everything.

If you only want a single piece or two, send me an email and offer. And I'll keep it in mind in case the whole lot doesn't sell.

Everything is in my shop in Renfrew, Ontario.

I'll try to post a full list of parts in a day or two.
I'll be putting it on eBay in roughly a week if there's no interest here.

Thanks for looking

Episode 4: Vintage Weekend

There was a big break between events and work going on that this episode took a bit longer to put together. It is definitely a different look at a race weekend as nothing went smoothly. It was a struggle from the very first session. In the end we ended up having to take a step away from the car and enjoy something different. Sometimes it's amazing how things can change so quickly from one event to the next.

Race Ready QRE Invader for sale, fresh, spares!

Hi all,

Circumstances have forced me to sell my Invader. The car is race ready (ran the June LRP regional) and was just refreshed this winter by Mike Quadrini. In fact, the only "old" part of the car is the body. Log book is current.

Every meaningful part of the chassis is new with the exception of the arms and front hubs, there was nothing wrong with them. He clipped the chassis and every tube from the roll bar back is brand new. The car also has a new seat, fuel cell, engine, floor pans, radiators etc etc. All work was performed by Mike Q

I also just installed an XT Racing GPS Pro 8 lap timer / digital dash / data acquisition system. It works great! I have throttle position, brake pressure, RPM, EGT and Water temp sensors installed and logging / displaying. The lap timing and telemetry features are really cool.

The engine in the car only has 3 race weekends on it. It was one of Herb Noble's run off's engines that he never put in a car, so it only has dyno time. I have another spare engine I bought from Herb that also only has dyno time on it. It has never been in a car!

Along with the engines, I have 3 sets of wheels and the race tires on the car have some life left in them. I am also including a formula car jack.

I've done so much to the car, it's practically new, as I said before, the only tired part of the car is the body.

I'm looking to get $9k for the whole package. I'm in a difficult position and would like to do a quick sale. I will post pictures in the next couple of days.

Sears Point Indy race

Nice fabricated yellow flag by Indy Car yesterday! 4 or 5 laps for nothing as the car was running and a white flag would have been the normal indication around the track for the slow car. It completely screwed up the order and while Montoya running into Power was his fault the scenario the yellow created also created the drama. They " didn't see " the pit fuel hose screw up for Rahal then couldn't put two and two together when they threw the yellow for the fuel nozzle and couldn't figure out that there would be only one ripped off nozzle in the pits and the rest of the world sees it on TV in Fontana! I wonder if anyone there has a brain? As for double points maybe football should introduce double points for the last quarter of a game? What a joke!Dixon did a hell of a job and deserved to win this debacle but this outcome was surely a long shot without the useless officiating!

07/06 GSXR 600 Engine 3K miles…

Purchased off ebay from “motor-psychos” (99.4% positive feedback since 2004) in October 2013. They advertised it as having only 3K miles on it with a speedometer pic.

The engine was shipped complete with original bike headers, radiator, wire harness etc. I disassembled it to the point shown in the pictures. I have never run it and it has been stored in a heated garage. It has been crated-up and is ready to ship.

Price - $900 plus shipping.

First Time Out (SRAAC Barber)

This past weekend I finally got to get the old Lotus 61 out at the track. This was the first time for me and the first time back on the track in near 30 years for the car. I entered the car in the SRAAC TT event at Barber Motorsport Park. I thought this would be a good shake down event for both me and the car. I do not have my competition license yet so I thought this would be a good place to learn. What an amazing track and a great event put on the Atlanta Region SCCA. My big concerns were having something break on the car (I did all the fabrication) and not to embarrass myself by getting in other peoples way. Well I am happy to admit the car ran flawlessly and was a blast to drive. My biggest problem was I could not get full throttle as once belted into the car my foot couldn't push the throttle all the way down. I will have to make another throttle pedal. I did manage to spin it once but other than that everything went extremely well for the 5 times out (total of 1 hr 20 min). One racer came up to me and asked what problems I had encountered with the car over the weekend and all I had for an answer was a slight oil leak in the transaxle and I dropped the tire pressure a pound in the front. I could not be more happy.

I would like to thank Garey Guzman for all his help, photos, and support over the weekend and all the racers who allowed me to come out and play. Truly a lifetime memory and it was so great to have the old car back on the track where it belongs.

WTB: LD200 Ring&Pinion 10:31

Hi Guys,

Since I have had so many issues with my car since purchase, I decided to tear down the gearbox and make sure everything was in good shape. Sadly, the ring and pinion are both scrap. I am in a bit of a hurry so will buy new if I have to, but can't really afford it.

Hoping someone has a decent 10:31 set they can sell me. Something with a bit of wear is OK, just not chips or major fretting. Let me know what you have!

PS: my spider gears are probably usable but not great, would love to find a better set of those too (or complete carrier) Mine is the 'later' model with .705 cross shaft, not sure what all is interchangeable.

Thanks,
Pat

Indycar Sonoma

Was it an earned championship or did the double points ruin what was a competitive season full of good racing?

Thoughts!!

Palmer!

NER hosted the first SCCA sanctioned event at Palmer Motorsports Park (aka Whiskey Hill Raceway) on August 21-23. What a fantastic new track! Although much of the infrastructure is yet to be complete, the track is a fantastic challenge. For those who are thinking about going, in Sept. or during the 2016 season, pen it on your calender.

Below are pictures which don't do it justice...

Bultaco

In the current Motorcycle Classics there is a nice story on the restoration of a Bultaco Metralla. The author, Corey Levenson, quotes from a story about Francisco Bulto, founder of Bultaco. It is said that on his deathbed at 86 Bulto said, "Bring me my moustache wax and my best Bultaco shirt. For a trip like this, you must be at your best." What shirt would you want?

2000 Van Diemen Zetec Pro Series Car

Competitive car has 6 Masters Podiums in 2015 F2000 championship series including a masters win. Over past three seasons we have extensively upgraded and refreshed all major components. Essentially a frame up rebuild when new engine was installed mid season 2014. Car has been professionally maintained.

For $38,000, I’m offering just car and wheels but have a very extensive new/used spares inventory and platform/stands/jacks. I would discuss a turnkey operation as well if buyer was interested.

• Elite Ford Zetec motor with pro spec with only 8 race weekends since complete rebuild
• New ring and pinion with 7 race weekends by Williams
• Selector housing rejigged with 2 race weekends by Williams
• Penske 3 way re-valved with 1 race weekend by Anze
• New complete clutch, master cylinder and slave seal.
• Aim evo4 with steering, front and rear brake and 4 shock sensors installed 2014
• Fuel pump with 4 race weekends and fresh foam/filter/regulator
• 2 spare sets of wheels including sticker rain tires
• All uprights rebuilt during 2015
• Engine wiring harness replaced prior to 2014 season
• Engine brace
• Driver adjustable front sway bar

For pro series racing body work would need a winter upgrade (engine cover, sides, sidepods) and the floor pan is functional but tired. Bodywork is probably fine for club racing.

Note that the close up pictures show a low downforce diffuser. Currently installed is a high downforce diffuser from Beasley.

Car is located in Cincinnati Ohio. Private message best way to contact me.

Twin Slave Batteries

What happens if you connect two 12v batteries in series? OK I know that - you get 24v.

What happens if you connect a really big and a very small battery in series? I guess you still get 24v - but what happens when you connect a load to them (like a starter motor)? Does anything drastic happen to either battery? Or do you just get a "stronger" start?

I ask because I saw someone doing that with a Hayabusa engine car yesterday. The guy claimed that 24v was necessary because the engine had 13:1 compression (but it was still only 1300cc). He claimed that the big battery provided the grunt and the small one the higher voltage. He also claimed that it was no problem for the starter motor since you only crank for a few seconds. His big battery was a conventional lead acid type you'd find in a big engined pickup, the small one a smaller-than-FF-size AGM.

I'd love to hear other people's reactions, comments, rebutals, recommendations etc. Is the big/small batterycombination better than, say, two medium size ones?

On my 13:1 4.3L V6 I use two SBS30 batteries connected in parallel to get a better start - would I be better connecting them in series?

Thx - Derek

used FFord asymmetric 4:2:1 exhaust

"used" asymmetric 4:2:1 purchased new from the manufacture going on 15 years ago for sale. the exhaust has been used less than ten times on a dyno, never in a car so is in effectively pristine condition. the ideal solution for someone needing an extremely clean "period correct" exhaust for participation in vintage events. it's too heavy (16.05 lbs) and doesn't make enough power for anything approaching serious competition in the current environment in my opinion. $750 plus shipping from 93555.

Crunch Time For The Kentledge Cup

Okey dokey, it seems with all the fuss going on over the tire debate in FF some racers are feeling a bit jaded. Hopefully the antidote will be The Kentledge Cup! We're at the point now where we really do need an idea of people interested in the Ford only Formula Ford race on your choice of treaded tires at this years ARRC at Road Atlanta - 6th-8th November.

The Atlanta region will allow us to have our own race/qually on the Sunday and what's more they've agreed to allow in vintage cars too! This is great news as it opens up our race to all those lovely older cars with non SCCA legal roll hoops. This should boost numbers and add to the Formula Ford Festival vibe!

For those that are doing the the regular ARRC Formula F race why not hang around until Sunday, throw on a set of treaded tires and join the fun!

Can those that are interested please let me know either by PM, email or simply replying to this thread. If you know of any vintage guys that might be interested please let them know too.

Thanks!

FS: Merlyn Body Molds

Every once in a while I still come across some old FF stuff I didn't know I had despite stopping work nearly ten years ago. Today I looked for something on top of the 'build in' and found these:

Merlyn CFF molds.

The classic Merlyn nose mold and a low height custom rear tail cover. This tail was used on a number of cars here in the AZ area 20yrs ago and is not original. Nor are either of the "first class" parts..I don't know who made them even. I do know we pulled some functional parts from both over the years. I'll see if I can dig up a pic of it in service- someone will know where the car is today I bet.

Don't want to split them up- both or none. I'm thinking $150 for the pair plus UPS. I think I can get a box from a neighbor who has big boxes, it's likely OS1 with UPS but light.

Call, pm, email, smoke signals whatever. Move 'em out or they hit the big green bin in a couple weeks.
