Just another example of why I might seem a little over the top when it comes to shipping and claims.
Today I had the unfortunate opportunity to inspect the results of a major university's robotic drone helicopter thingy. Apparently there is some "little" competition these Aerospace Engineering students were attending with a $2MM prize. Those finals were here in CA and started today! I am thinking SAE competition on steroids. With many of the big players in the industry attending, I am also thinking career opportunities as well.
They paid a professional company to crate up this 9 foot long robotic helicopter to ship out here to CA. That professional crating company hired a LTL carrier to transport the shipment to CA. You guessed it---the helicopter fuselage was destroyed. It arrived in CA just in time to alert the University representatives. I understand they had to cancel their travel plans.
I was almost sick to my stomach thinking what was at stake for these students, and the culmination of all this work...
My opinion is the crate was woefully inadequate to protect the shipment during normal transportation and handling. Not the carriers' fault. Certainly not the University's or student's fault. Who is going to get stuck on this one?
Stated value of drone/robot was more than I paid for my last house in So.Cal. I'm guessing after applying the appropriate tariff rules they will be very lucky to get somewhere around $6800. Oh and there's this little bit:
"Carriers participating in this tariff shall not be liable to shipper or
any other person or entity, whether claiming under an agreement making
reference to these rules, under tariff incorporating these rules or
services otherwise performed by carriers participating in this tariff or
its agents, for consequential, incidental, special, punitive, exemplary,
economic (to include loss of income or profits) or similar damages of any
kind or nature, however caused and on any theory of liability, even if
carriers participating in this tariff or its agents knew or should have
known of the possibility of such damages."
Bottom line: I am paranoid for good reason ;)
