Possible Future Scenerio

I have been pondering this for about 6 months.

I have struggled to find the right words to present this idea, so bear with me.

A bit of background:

1. Few really enjoy mixed class racing, least of all those in the slowest class in the run group (think FV).

2. The F2kCS and F1600CS have been relatively successful because they offer single class racing, albeit at a higher price point than club racing.

3. One of SCCA's largest classes, FV, has shown a decline partly because of the run groups the competitors have been presented with.

4. The Majors program has been instituted to improve the quality of the experience for those that are competing "nationally".

5. I witnessed Steve Davis deliver an impassioned speech for safety while on the podium at the 3013 Sebring Major.

6. The Majors program does have a provision for "invitationals".

7. At Barber a week ago I witnessed exciting FV racing in a single class run group.

8. Many drivers would like to drive in Majors for Runoffs points.

Current events:

A few months back a loosely organized group of FV drivers worked together to promote a FV only run group at Mid-Ohio in conjunction with a pro event. Interviewing participants, it appears to have been a success.

In the past week or so, Steve Davis has taken the lead to create a FV only run group at the 2014 ARRC. He did so by using social media and making folks submit a down payment to insure commitment. He received enough commitments to convince the Atlanta Region to give FV it's own run group.

Going Forward:

What if.... The Majors program announced the 2015 schedule. And in each Major event they left one run group open for "bid".

Stick with me here.

Let's say that by a certain announced date, the first class that prepaid for registration that achieved say 30 entries, that class would run as a single run group. If the required count was not met, then the organizers fall back to a mixed class or the second highest bidder. If the required count was met, and a certain class won the bid, then only 40% of the entry fee would be refunded to those registered in that class and failed to show. (that makes the competitors have skin in the game, and stops ballot box stuffing).

In this scenario, a enthusiastic class could select say 6 events on the year's schedule and really push to get their class to show at those events, getting larger fields and better racing.

Steve Davis has already shown a "proof of concept".

Just a thought.

I expect the flame machine to start within seconds. :)
