I'm sure many of you are aware of 24 hour of LeMons; the most terrifying racing series around (not just because of the cars!: google "sorry for party racing" and don't blame me for what you see). I had the pleasure (or misfortune?) of driving an 80's 300zx with a Saab B motor stuffed in it on several occasions, and each time I left unsure as to how I managed to keep it on the black stuff. Let's just say the turbo lag off throttle was pretty intense!
Unfortunately the car was binned a few weeks ago at Loudon, in very lemony fashion, after 5 years of managing to never hit a wall and winning multiple times. They were in the lead after Saturday, and during the first lap of Sunday's session, managed to eat the wall and collect 2nd place along with them.
I wanted to share an article written about the car and some old college roommates of mine that built it. It's a great story of the (very real) engineering that goes into the cars racing in LeMons and the party like atmosphere that is encouraged every weekend (my personal favorite is the wooden train whistle plumbed to the blow off valve).
It's a good reminder that while racing can get very serious (even in SCCA), sometimes you need to take a step back and remember why you started racing in the first place. The comraderie, the teamwork, the feeling of being behind the wheel on track (no matter what it's attached to!), the elation of winning, and all too often, the despair of failure. In the end though, we all do it for fun! It's why I think LeMons is a great series.
There are several cool video's linked in the story, and user name "RThodal" has many, many cool videos of the car in action (I have the blue helmet).
