how to attach intrusion protection?

I am planning on adding aluminum intrusion protection to protect my legs in case of A-arm entry in a crash. I was thinking of different ways of attaching the pieces {cardboard for now], but I am not sure anything more than cabel ties is indicated or helpful. Any thoughts?
