Rear stub axle

Does anyone know how to remove the six nuts next to the axle. These have the thick spacers that fit the grooves in the axle. This is a 96 VD FC. I need to change the axle as the threads were stripped. Would it be easier to get a tap and die set and try to repair those threads.
