Source for Tie Rod boots

Anyone know a source for new rubber boots for tie rod ends. You know the nice flexible rubber jobs. like this:

I can't seem to find a source for just the boots without buying the whole damn tie rod, keeping the boot, and tossing the tie rod. Grrrr.

I've tried the new Polyurathane jobs from Energy Suspension, but they're way too stiff, don't allow the tie rod fo flex and their sizes don't seem to work on my old vintage FF.

Any ideas welcome.

Zetec air temp sensor

Newly installed but used Zetec will not start. Air temp sensor has broken pin, will this cause the no start? Also, we get spark at 150-170 rpm cranking speed, per the Aim dash. Is this correct (possible) or do we have a problem with the Aim dash along with the Pectel T-2 ECU system?

New question....Pickling Procedure???

"disconnect forward fuel line to drain fuel - disconnect return line into tank at top by fuel filler - put castor oil in aspen bottle full turn fuel on blow into system - turn fuel off - reconnect top fuel line

fuel pump needs castor oil (break tie raps) and lift up

spray WD-40 into each cylinder through plug hole - crank engine"

So these instructions were included with the car. I'm confused about a couple things.

What is an "aspen bottle"? That may not be the correct spelling as the notes were hand-written. It sounds like an external tank that gets connected and filled with castol oil that when pressurized gets fed into and replaces methanol in the fuel lines and metering system?

And when you blow through the system its not clear from which end? From the input side, or return side?

And breaking tie wraps and lifting fuel pump? There are no ties on the fuel pump, but I assume the point here is to disconnect the pump such that it can be manually maneuvered to put castol oil in it and coat all the internal surfaces?

Making good progress here with your help.

Thanks....

Performance Bearing

I'd like to put in a good word for Jack and his team at Performance Bearing. He put new ceramic bearings in the rear hubs of my 94 VD at a very reasonable cost. He took the time to build a plate to safely press the hubs out of the old bearings, skimmed the hubs to make brake disc removal much easier and repaired a couple of bearing retainer bolts. He sent me the plate he'd made for any future work.
Thanks Jack!

Mid-Ohio FF Triple Weekend

Looks like a great grid, including the return of Kyle Kirkwood (Road Atlanta winner), as well as David Grant in the Polestar Spectrum.

Plus Scott Andrews, Steve Bamford, four Pelfrey cars and a lot of other fast entries.

Mid-Ohio Midpoint

Sam Beasley is coming off a sweep at VIR, but may have to handle John LaRue (always fast) this weekend, the usual suspects on the grid, and first-time F2000 Pro entrant Brandon Dixon.

This thread will serve as our usual discussion point, and results/news/photos can be found on www.F2000Series.com

Ideas for racing in 100 degree heat

It's going to be hot a Roebling this weekend, and I'm worried about heat issues with the DB-1. Any ideas from people with experience running FFs in high heat?

Overheating Problems

I had issues with water temps at Black Hawk just as I had at Gingerman. Had a few recommendations at the track but none of them got the temps down.

-I got temps under 200 by removing the thermostat.
-Bleeding the system had no affect (all bleeder lines are open and functional)
-The radiator lines were hot both top and bottom so water is going through both of them as designed.
-I'm running 70%water and 30% antifreeze. Was running 50/50 before. No drop in temps.

At this point I think it can only be one of two things, the water pump or the radiators themselves. I'm going to have them boiled and fins straightened out but I doubt that is what is having me run 25+ degrees hotter than guys who aren't running the thermostat.

I am running the oil cooler in front of the left radiator but that hod no change in water temp. Plus other guys are running the oil cooler in front and have no problem with water temps.

Can we replace the water pump without damaging an SCCAE seal? Not sure if there is one on the front cover or not.

Desirable FA's

I,m in the market for another car. As far as a Toyota engined carburetor car what would be considered the most desirable cars? Something that will not be so hard to sell in the future. I'm hoping the FA's will make a comeback in VARA, at least they way it was before the market meltdown in '08. Thanks.

Oil pressure

Hi:

I just recently started logging oil pressure, and I'd like to see how this compare to what others get.
Would it be possible for one of you to post screenshots of the plots you get? Ideally rpm and oil pressure in the same screenshot, vs time or distance.

And if possible a scatter plot of oil pressure vs rpm.

Thanks,
JS

Challenge Series Round #3

It’s almost time for the inaugural Bay of Quinte Grand Prix, featuring the DAC Trillium Trophy Races, July 18/19, at Shannonville Motorsport Park.

DAC has partnered with Move Motorsports Management and brought back the Shannonville date with a new name, new energy and increased level of fun.

For starters, based on competitor feedback, we will be racing the Pro Track configuration.
At registration competitors will receive an event t-shirt and grab bag with lots of cool samples. The weekend will also be full of prizes for each class of competition - announced in the coming weeks.

DAC is happy to welcome the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship along with their Quebec rivals as this is the 3rd round of the popular F1600 Super Series. F2000 Canada and Radical Canada Cup will be in attendance as well as the Miller Oils F1200 Series who will have stiff competition from many US entries as this will be a round of the Challenge Cup. The CASC GT Sprints will enjoy stretching their legs on the Pro Track layout and the GT Challenge will run their traditional one-hour race on the Saturday. The VARAC Vintage Historics will also be there to put on a great show.

The DAC event has always been known for the fantastic Saturday evening dinner and that will return without a doubt. Additionally, we can all keep bench racing at the Saturday night drivers party in downtown Belleville and keep the party going.

For fans we have added professional commentator Pat Gonsalves on the play-by-play with DAC member Rick Creuzberg adding the colour commentary. Some popular food trucks from the region will be there to enhance the experience for fans as well.

There is a show-and-shine on the Sunday for German marques (so if you own one bring it along,) a vendor alley with automotive themed displays and a host of vendors showcasing the diverse Prince Edward County, Bay of Quinte and Great Waterway region.

Competitors will have a driver, plus 6 crew members allowance as per all CASC events, but it should be noted tickets are being sold to locals and fans. Early registration will also get you 4 complimentary passes to the event for family and friends. All CASC licensed holders will get access to the facility whether you are entered or not. For further questions do not hesitate to contact Jason Sharpe at 416-557-5451.

We are really looking forward to hosting an excellent motorsport experience and can’t wait to see you all there!

What do you think about Formula E?

I've watched a couple of races on TV, found them uninspiring. Seems to be about the same level as Indy Lights, but for old drivers from lesser series (no idea why I think that). The young shoes seem to be tearing themselves up in F3. Interesting to me that NPjr won the championship, ex-F1 pay driver and Nascar truck driver, also Scott Speed. What makes me ask is that people seem to be touting it's "success" but as far as I can see it's main success is that it just hasn't failed yet.

First Drive

Well today I got to have the first drive of my Lotus 61 after four years of building it from nothing more or less. As it was a quiet Sunday I decided to drive it down the street and back. It is about a quarter mile to the 4 way stop. So my wife is out with the video to capture the big event. Fire it up and away I go. Hey this is fun, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, oops a bit slow for 3rd. Back into 2nd and carry on to the stop sign. Get to the sign and stop. Move off to do a U turn and stall it in the middle of the intersection. Fire it back up and I can't turn it around in one shot. Back it up stall again. Look up and there is the Sherriff sitting there in his patrol car. Damn. Does he see me? Oh yes he does, he is staring straight at me. Hmmm what to do. I do what anybody else would do, give him a wave and take off. Look in the mirror as I head for home and he is behind me. Sheet, I think now what. As I come around the bend here is the wife videoing me for the history books with a cop following me. She says you have to be kidding me. I pull up outside the house and switch it off. He pulls up beside me and says what the hell is that. That is cool. Relief!!! He sat there for 15 minutes talking about the car. I told him that when I first seen him I just about crapped. He said oh I wasn't going to pull you over I just wanted to see the car. So in all it was a great experience and a memorable one.:p

Sunday Wins for Wang and Van Hanson

Sunday wins for Wang and Van Hanson give Formula 1200 three different winners in three races at the BARC Grand Prix of Ontario

Bowmanville (June 28, 2015) – Formula 1200 added a pair of races on Sunday to its activities at the BARC Grand Prix of Ontario and came away from the event with three different drivers celebrating victory in as many races.

In the morning’s race 2, the battle between Phil Wang and Kevin Kapelke resumed right where it had left off after Kapelke’s victory in race 1 on Saturday. The deciding move again came down to the final corners, but this time it was Wang who was first to the checkers.

“It was a tight race yesterday and Kevin got me at the line,” Wang said. “I led most of today’s race, but I looked in the mirror and he was catching up every lap. Again today he got me on the back straightaway, but I managed to get back around him in turns 8 and 9 and take the win.”

The morning’s race was run under a downpour, and a slick turn 3 caught several drivers out, including Matt Garwood, who slid into the tires in turn 3 on lap 2 and lodged his first career DNF, and Jeremy Steinhausen, who also had an off at the exact same spot two laps later. A third driver, American Garrett Villano, was forced to retire on lap 6 with a clutch issue. Fortunately, all three drivers were able to make repairs in time to rejoin competition in the afternoon.

Race 3 saw a lead change on every single lap as an epic four-car battle raged on throughout the entire running. At the line, it was Peter Van Hanson who crossed the line first, making him the top Masters class finisher twice in one day.

“It was a lot of fun,” Van Hanson said of the four-way battle. “I really didn’t know what the outcome was going to be because I couldn’t tell where the other guys were. All I knew is I didn’t want to be in first going onto the back straight on the last lap, and it worked out.”

Despite heavy rain and challenging conditions, both races were run entirely under green. The only retirement from Sunday afternoon’s race was for Jeremy Steinhausen, who had a brake issue that carried over from the morning’s damage and left him unable to continue.
Formula 1200 returns to action at the upcoming inaugural Bay of Quinte Grand Prix, which will take place at Shannonville Motorsports Park on July 18 and 19. Tickets can be purchased online at bayofquintegp.com.

Kapelke pulls off last-turn pass for victory in Race 1

Bowmanville (June 27, 2015) – Polesitter Phil Wang led every lap of today’s Formula 1200 race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park except one: the last.

In a well-timed pass out of the final corner, Kevin Kapelke pulled to the inside of Wang and set off a drag race to the finish line, which Kapelke won by just 0.042 seconds to claim victory in race 1 at this weekend’s BARC Grand Prix of Ontario.

Kapelke had spun in the first turn on the first lap and had to recover 10 positions to put himself back in position to challenge for the victory in the last.

“Phil was in fourth gear and I downshifted to third,” Kapelke said of his final move. “I didn’t know if I was going to make it out of the corner, but all of a sudden it gripped and I got the run to the finish line.”

The conditions for the event were highly challenging as the competitors took the green under a downpour that lasted through the entire running.

“This is probably about the worst condition that I’ve raced in,” Kapelke said. “If you had someone in front of you, you couldn’t see anything at all. It was rather brutal. It was fun, though.”

Joining Kapelke and Wang on the podium was Van Peter Hanson in 3rd, who was also the top finisher in Masters class.

Several racers faced arduous circumstances in today’s race, including Matt Garwood, who was spun out by early contact and recovered to finish 8th, and Johan Wasserman, who brought out the event’s only caution period after being forced to stop on track due to a mechanical issue. Wasserman’s damage was reparable, and he is expecting to take part in race 2 of the weekend on Sunday.

Formula 1200 returns to action at the BARC Grand Prix of Ontario on Sunday with a 10 minute practice session and a pair of 20 minute races. Fans can follow live timing of all the weekend’s action at racehero.io.

IndyCar in California - spolier

When the race ended I was sure the win would be taken away due to Rahal's pit incident. And I was sure that Walker regretted his decision not to impose punishment immediately. Now it looks like a fine/loss of points which maybe is appropriate. I guess precedent should rule here, and I don't know that history. I am interested in the opinions of the Apex community.

What are these Penske Shocks?

Just curious if anyone can tell me what these penske shocks? I'm tryiing to find details on line, are they 8000 series. I had my shock man pull them down. they have conventional shims but the bottom cap is retained by a circlip. Also the canister uses a shim stack not the normal bleed hole 8100 type.

I've been cleaning out the garage which is why I have so many Penskes bit and pieces.

Thanks in advance

Set 4 - Penske 8760 Piggyback 3way adjustable

For sale set of 4 Penske 3 way adjustable shocks with High speed and low speed bump control and general rebound control.

These are great shocks and I had been holding onto them for an endurance car project we have been developing. Have now fitted 4way 8765 as that gave us more shaft options in 1/2 diameter

We had to get these custom adjusted due to space issues, these use the shortest 1/2 shafts that we could buy from penske but as this is 6.625. we had to use shorter bodies and a 1-1/2 external bump stop.

Shocks are just been sent for servicing and shimmed with a linear piston and a/c and b/c shims. While being serviced they are being fitted with brand new shafts ($460 usd) , piston ring, oil and shims. If anyone wanted shimmed differently I could get shock shop I use to custom shim if in next 10 days.

Shocks have following spec

2.25in travel
Penske 45mm bodies
12in (approx) total extended length
Come with spring adjusters 2in as pictured

$3500 shipped. These are $1380 each new.
