Pinto High Speed miss

I have a miss that I'm unable to trace and appreciate input and comments.

Van Diemen RF01

Pinto

Professionally built engine has approximately 4 competition hours - 3 weekends

Chassis underwent ground up winter 2013

Wiring all renewed/verified correct

Engine new for 2014 season.

Points/condenser ignition. (Please no debate around Pertronix vs points - I've used points for over 20 years with no issues)

Mechanical fuel pump

Good news is that this miss is reproducible in the shop. Bad news is that I've run out of things to try.

Miss is generally a high speed miss, starting around 5000 RPM, getting progressively worse as the upper ranges are reached. At 6500-7000 it has a "ba-da-ba-da-ba-da-ba" that almost sounds like a rev limiter. I don't have a rev limiter.

What I've done with absolutely no effect:

New points/condenser

Exchanged distributor

New Coil

New distributor cap, rotor, coil & spark plug wires

New Plugs

New Master switch

New Ignition switch

Bypassed all onboard ignition/starter wiring & replaced with mini harness made up for test purposes

Replaced Battery

Verified carb is correct - it went back to the engine builder who ran it on an engine on his dyno. Not the carb

Exchanged carb

Replaced fuel pump

Verified valve lash

Bypassed the Mychron dash - left it completely out of the system

Ran it on the onboard battery & the jumper battery separately

Replaced starter (really getting obscure here - possibly the big lug on the solenoid was arcing internally - it wasn't)

Replaced fuel lines

Verified the fuel level is correct in carb after hot cut.

Verified the fuel vent is working properly.

Fuel filter shows no signs of deterioration of cell foam

History of the miss:

-Weekend #1 - no problem

-Weekend #2 - Double weekend - No problem Saturday, started in Sunday's race.

-Miss was reproducible in the shop so between events, I tried a lot of things listed above and convinced myself it was the carb. Replaced the carb with another, and went racing.

-Miss was present through practice and qualifying on Saturday of the next event. Saturday evening, we replaced a fitting on the "hot" wire to the ignition, separated the plug wires a bit better near the distributor cap and replaced the plugs. Miss WENT AWAY for the morning race and came back during the afternoon's race.

-Shop running (2 weekends worth!) since to try to figure this out.

Any and all thoughts welcome. I'll even be open to the Pertronix suggestion if someone wants to lend me a distributor that's already set up. I'll pay freight both ways to/from 33907.

Thanks

John

scales and platform for sale

A friend of mine has this pro scale setup for sale. Rumor has it these were once Rahal's in the mid 80s. Very high quality.

The bridges are massive, I'm guessing 150 lbs each. The longacre scales are permanently attached. Great for a big shop where they can remain set up.

I've used them for a narrow-track 95 VD FC, and FM, FA fit too, as well as stuff up to Indy car sizes.

"ran when parked" Has not been used in at least 7 years.

$1000. PM me and I'll put you in touch with the owner - he's in his 70s, screens his calls, and can't hear very well any more.

Small Open Trailer

Well, most of the trailers listed here are a tic larger than this one. It is an open trailer currently set up for an FST. With a hacksaw and a blow torch, it could be anything you wish. Weight is right at 300 lbs. (I tow is with a Chevy Cruze) and is very low slung to allow loading without ramps. Storage for canopy poles and hand winch for easy "old guy" loading. Titled in Illinois.

Photos tell most of the story, PM or call to ask more questions.

Caracal D Roller - $3000

Late 80's/early 90's Caracal D with closed-top Razor bodywork. Engine has since been removed, but transmission is still installed. Chassis has always been garaged, and is in excellent shape. I'm figuring someone out there could appreciate this car and relatively rare bodywork. I was preparing to cut it months ago to allow my 6"2' 210lbs frame to fit in the car (that's why the masking tape is there), but I'm opting to sell it unmolested instead. Perhaps someone with an extra engine could put this rolling chassis to good use in SCCA. Includes extra set of wheels.

Two roll bar numbers ???

While in restoration of my 1973 MRE FF, I was removing a roll bar extension loop this afternoon, and underneath the weld was another test hole on the drivers (left) side of the bar. I removed the paint with stripper and found a second roll hoop stamped number.

The first number set was on the right side of the bar and 4" below the drill hole and numbers vertically stamped 023 1039 without a dash between sets. I thought this might be an SCCA region and ID number from area 23 (upstate New York)and log book # 1039, I have SCCA checking this in region, but region 23 never starts their numbers with a zero.

The latest discovery from this afternoon (and older based on visual traits) of numbers is on the left side of the bar and is stamped 071-140 and is vertical on the bar but the letters are stamped left to right in horizontal format with a dash between sets.

The car in question is a 1973 MRE (vin #03) and was the works race and development car in England from 1973 - 1975 when MRE became Tiga. The car was rolled off as the first production MRE Formula Ford, but it also took shape as a Formula 2000 during its MRE years before return to FF. Was sold at auction at Cheffin's in England in 2000. The car history has been verified by Jim Gleave of MRE as well as other (Hewland) documentation on the car. When purchased last year it did not come with a logbook associated to the car.

Would the RAC in England be a possible source of info on these stamped numbers ?

Any ideas or input is appreciated... JB

Does anyone here have experience with real-time live video feeds from a racecar. I have an application at work that I could really use some lightweight wireless cameras to mount on a robot. TDC Indicator

I am going to perform a leakdown on my Pinto. Does anybody know of an indicator that fits our 18mm plug threads? I am not sure how well a dial indicator will work thru the plug hole.

Maybe I can gut an old plug and insert a spring loaded dowel.

Why us?

OK, Am I alone in wondering why FF will be combined with the go-karts (F5) for the Runoffs?

A quick look at the number of entries for each class shows:

FA 17

F1K 15

FC 22

FE 11

FF 26

FM 18

FV 32

F5 11

So the second largest Formula car class (FF) will be combined with F5 to make the largest grouping of Formula cars. Does that make sense? It does not to me. With all the money HPD is using to buy the class, how can they stand for that?

Sorry for the rant. It just seems that the classes with less than 15 entries could be combined. Oh wait Enterprises would not like that.

This post is the result of three glasses of wine with dinner and I have not even poured my Cognac yet.

Help - Golf Cart Insurance for Runoffs

I'm planning to either bring my golf cart to the Runoffs or rent one there. I've never dealt with an insurance requirement like this before at a race track ($1MM liability coverage and a long list of additional insureds). I have home, auto, personal property, and general liability insurance with State Farm. Just spoke to them and here's the answer.

1. They won't add any additional insureds to my liability policy, and it wouldn't cover anything related to a golf cart anyway.

2. $1MM coverage is more than they will write on an owned golf cart policy.

3. They won't provide any insurance on a rented golf cart.

So is anyone else running into this type of road block? How is everyone else dealing with this insurance requirement?

Thanks, Corty

Pls help me understand ClubF, rf83 related

Hi Folks,

I've been a lurker for years but this is my first post. I'm in the market to buy a CFF after getting tired of running producing cars for 20 years. My question(s):

Are CF rules likely change to include early rocker arm cars like a VD rf83? I've run across a couple and I like the cars but they don't fit the Monoposto rules or many regional CF rules but neither are they at the forefront of FF technology.

Or, is there likely to be a sort-of "tiering" of CF, say vintage (outboard shock) and then the middle generation? Or is the CF pre-1981 rule pretty set in stone?

Just trying to figure what the best and safest car to run regionally would be.

Thx

Helmet requirement

When will helmets with a 2010 Snell sticker become mandatory?

96 Van Diemen Clutch Release Bearing

My 96 Van Diemen FC has a Tilton 5-1/2 clutch. During my slave rebuild we discovered that the release bearing (Saab) is too large in diameter for the Tilton pressure plate. From what I understand this is the standard release bearings on VD and is intended for a 7-1/4 inch clutch. The proper Tilton bearing is 38 mm, which is too small for the VD slave piston. Any recommendations as to a source for the smaller bearing that works with the VD design? This car and the earlier VD's (90 thru 95) have a smaller bell housing/oil tank that cannot accept the tilton slave cylinder mod. so I''m kind of stuck. Prefer not to turn out a custom slave piston if possible. Thanks for all recommendations.

starter motor won't turn off

Any ideas on why my starter motor suddenly won't turn off after starting the car? It worked fine last time out. I have since installed a new battery, but changed nothing else. I have a longacre 3 position start switch, down is off, middle is run and up is momentary starter motor position. The switch returns to the middle run position, but the starter motor keeps running.

Thanks for any advice.

Final answer:Track vs Runoffs records

Finally I can finish this post from almost a year ago. According to Terry Ozment, SCCA Vice President, Runoffs records were always kept separate from track records because way back when the Runoffs were at Mid Ohio, they ran a different track configuration from what was used for National events. The practice continued even though it was not necessary at any other Runoffs track. She has assured me that going forward there will not be two listings.

After I asked the initial question, I took the last 5 years Runoffs records and compared them to Road America's track records and updated them when necessary. Below is what was submitted to Terry and those faster Runoffs records are now on the CENDIV website with the exception of SSB and SSC. They are not correct but they have been notified.

As you can see in the spread sheet below the classes and current RA records are on top. Each year is on the left and the fastest times are all highlighted in red.

There are only 2 RA records that would stand over Runoffs records.

Records have been broken 51 times in the last 5 years.

In 2009, 7 Runoffs records surpassed the existing RA track records.

2010 saw the most records set with 16 Runoffs records beating the RA or previous Runoffs records; 5 of which are still fastest today.

In 2011, 9 records were reset; 6 of which are still fastest.

2012 saw 12 records broken and 11 of those are still the best today.

In 2013, 6 bettered RA and previous Runoffs records and are fastest yet today.

Gear Spotlight: Bell Racing GP.2 Carbon Fiber Helmet

From time to time, we here at Winding Road Racing would like to share some of our articles on racing equipment and gear (we have a number of buyer's and racing guides in our catalog on WindingRoad.com).

Next up: Bell Racing GP.2 Carbon Fiber Helmet

Quote:

Not long ago, a racing helmet with full carbon fiber shell construction would have commanded a price tag of well over a thousand dollars. Now Bell Racing, one of the most trusted brands in racing gear, has introduced the GP.2 Carbon helmet into their lineup for 2014, and it's a bit of a game changer. By using Bell's own high-pressure resin transfer molding system, the company is now able to offer the virtues of carbon fiber shell construction at a much more accessible price point.
