CV ?s
I'm in need of new CV joints and need input please. There seem to be three kinds of common cv joints. Basic which I assume are stock VW part. Heavy Duty that are an upgraded part, and lighted which seem to be the upgraded part and the race turned down. So which one do I use?

'86 Reynard SF2000(Handyman Special)
As the title and pictures (will attach when I can get this #%&@^&^ computer to pop up the pop-up box to attach photos!!) suggest, this car is in need of someone to lovingly put her back together. It was stripped, blasted, repaired (as needed), & repainted. The rollhoop was changed a few years back to enlarge the cockpit area for a "larger" driver. Each corner has a brand new wheel bearing (about as expensive as nuclear turbine bearings but harder to source!!!) and a new motor/frame mounting plate. Other stuff:
* Dixon 2.0 Pinto Engine w/ drysump system, weber carb, header & exhaust
* Hewland Mk 9 gearbox
* 1 set of Compo Turbo wheels and many, many tires
* 1 pair Bilstein (fr) & 1 pr Koni (rear) Shocks
* Cleaned & prepped radiators
* Brake bias adjuster w/ LD-19's all around
* Longacre Digital Tach
* Splined quick release w/ original Reynard steering wheel (Momo, I believe)
I've probably forgotten a number of things but for the most part it's all there except the rear wing (prep shop lost that - go figure! - that's why I won't guarantee everything is there to complete the car). It will need a replacement front wing support bar and left wing - wing is useable but pretty beat up. Body is complete less the diaper (I think everyone has ditched this worthless piece of ... fiberglass) but the nose will need a patch/repair. And lastly, it does have an SCCA logbook.
Asking $5000 for the whole lot (worth about a 1/3 more if parted out - see below!!).
I do have an open deck Alum. Trailer available that towed this car very well.
ATTENTION****:D:D****BUZZARDS****ATTENTION****:D
From now until May 16th, I'm only wanting to talk with people interested in the whole car. After that date, I will relist the car in pieces and will entertain offers for individual bits. So, please indulge me until then.
PM works fine or try my email: cjbachmann at att (dot) net
Thanks, John
PS: Since I can't attach pictures right now, the fuel cell, engine, oil tank, & gearbox are already attached to the frame. Also, the front suspension (less shocks & springs), pedals, & master cylinders are attached as well.

Oil Level 94/95 VD
Hi everyone.
Quick question: Does anyone know what the correct oil level setting is for a 94/95 VD?
And are you measuring it to the bottom of the tank or to the top of the tube inside?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers.

rocker shaft inspection and maintenance?
The manual is vague, and googling is futile. Two of my rocker arms seem to slide back and forth, not wiggling like a worn bushing but slipping. Other rocker arms seem shimmed w spring washers and spacers but these two aren't.
Can anyone link me to information pertaining to kent 1600 rocker shaft rebuilding, inspecting, and or maintenance?
Nothing looks worn and I'd like to keep it that way.
Update for today:
Vinegar soaking the header pipes and prepping it for paint!!

SoCal Major turnout
Was pretty neat seeing 16 F2000 cars entered for last weekends Major at Buttonwillow. I'd say it was like the old days, but I can't remember an SCCA event over here with that many cars.
Lets hope it's a sign of the times and this will carry over to 2015.
Also a big congrats to Tom Hope, just 3 weeks after switching from a Carbir to the VD, he won both days. Good on ya Tom!

Zeitler FV Trailing Arms
I am restoring a 1969 Zeitler FV (see photos) and found the original trailing arms to have multiple cracks. My local fabricator (a certified NHRA fabricator/welder) was able to reproduce them for me and has created a jig to make more. If anyone out there is fortunate enough to own a vintage Zeitler and may need replacements for your trailing arms, please send me a pm and I'll be happy to help.

G-Force Belts say FIA Rated, Are They?
I bought a 6-point harness from Amazon, a G-Force Cam-lock Model 7001. The stamps say SFI 16.1 certified with date of manufacture of May 2014 (a miracle, perhaps).
They were labeled FIA-rated.
The actual model number has been superceded by G-Force by their newer 7501 model, which is also labeled FIA-rated.
I e-mailed G-Force and didn't get a response. I will try to call them when I get out of work.
But if any of you have experience as a scrutineer or with belt inspection on your end, any guidance would be appreciated. I returned the first set of belts I received and asked Amazon to look for FIA-tags on whatever they send me. I may end up returning these too.
Thanks, Ryan

DUFFUS 2014 Race #1 Entry is Open
Hi,
The entry for DUFFUS 2014 Race #1 at Mid Ohio on the Fourth of July weekend is now open on MotorsportReg.com. Just search for "DUFFUS" and you will be taken to the entry.
Two practice sessions on Friday, a qualifying session and race #1 on Saturday, races #2 & #3 on Sunday. Kill stickers for podium finishers in each class in each race. Trophies for podium finishers in each class and the lucky "dead last" finisher in race #3 of the weekend. Each driver will receive a packet with a DUFFUS series poster, DUFFUS suit patch and two DUFFUS series stickers to be placed on the car. Additional posters, patches and stickers will be available for sale to defray the cost of the ones we are giving away. Given the exquisite, dignified nature of our logo we expect all of these things to become collector items someday.............
All cars will be on track with one another in each on track session. You may enter as FF, CF, VCF or VFF. We will work with you to verify compliance so that everyone feels welcome and will know who they are racing against for the kill stickers and trophies.
Timing will be handled by the folks at FRP and as such AMB transponders will be required on all cars. You must bring your own with you.
I think that covers the basics and hopefully the race registration form reflects that (my fault if it does not). Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions joemffracer@verizon.net.
A couple of things to remember; this event and series is being organized by 4 drivers, please lower your expectations for thoroughness! We have no experience as registrars, but we are going to do everything we can to accommodate, but we need your help with a few things.
Please try to get registered early and remember that as an SCCA sanctioned event all the drivers/participants (people who need to get into the hot pits) will have to be SCCA members. We do not anticipate (at this time) being able to contact the club office from the track on the race weekend, so please get your membership (temporary memberships for the weekend are available or the regular annual membership) taken care of before you arrive at the track.
Please try to have your SCCA annual tech inspection taken care of the reduce the burden on our Chief of Tech. He is a volunteer who has other duties that weekend so we would like to go easy on him. We will be verifying safety gear as required by the GCR including head restraint devices.
The entire entry fee of goes to Formula Race Promotions so please get your check mailed to us so the we can have it about 10 days before the event. We have to present a single check to FRP on Thursday before the race weekend begins for all the entries. We do not have the ability to accept credit card payments, so please; checks only. There are fees associated with having MotorsportReg collect entry fees and we are trying to keep this as inexpensive for the drivers as is possible that is why payment is direct to us.
As a club race being conducted as part of a pro weekend, please bear in mind that everything is by schedule so please make sure you are ready to go at the published times. The scheduled track times on the entry are the "plan". There are sometimes adjustments to the schedule during the weekend and we will be keeping in close communication with the folks from FRP and letting you know about any changes during the weekend.
We have also had very generous offers of contingency awards from the kind folks at SpeedSeat and Quicksilver Race Engines. We will have the details and award criteria worked out and will share that with you in the driver packet given out at the track on the race weekend.
This is intended to be low key, low pressure, just for the love of it racing. We hope you all decide to come and have fun with us.
Thanks,

Now for something ............
....... completely different [sort of ....]
Just after the Road Atlanta Major, Jason got notified his recent at-work project requires him travel alot to the West Coast for most of this year, specifically, to the Pacific Northwest/Seattle area - he spent 9+ months traveling to Healdsberg/Northern CA in 2012.
In 2012 he got to race at Laguna - spent time at Thunderhill and went to IndyCar/Nascar/Ferrari Days at Golden State/Sears - What is the racing scene at/near Seattle ?
And, so racing will take a bit of a backseat - and on top of it he had to move to new digs -- recalling, some extra time, I though I would share a "computerdesk rearwing chair" I built for him themed around the db-1. (car photo -thanks Dennis Valet)
Yes the "wing" has four wheels and a poor attempt at a diffuser !

Three have entered already. Let's see if we can break 20 entries for the start of the New England season. I hope to see you there.

WTB Travel Wheels
Somebody took my money and never delivered the stuff I ordered, so I'm in the market for two sets of travel wheels that fit a 99+ Van Diemen drive pin pattern with the larger size pins.
I'd either take used wheels, or I'll be willing to get new ones made provided the fabricator can get them done in less than 6 months and will actually return phone calls & e-mails.

Thumbs up to St Louis Region!
I just want to give a huge THUMBS UP to all the members of the St Louis Region that made this weekends races a fantastic experience. All the workers were unbelieveable and your hospitality did not go unnoticed. We brought a new race car and Mike Wolfe in Tech made getting it on track a walk in the park & Peter Zekert was awesome. Knowing he represents me on the BOD makes me more confident in the SCCA leadership then I have been in a long time. Do yourself a favor and make a race at Gateway this season, you won't regret it.:greenflag: St Louis Region we will be back.

Chassis Set Up
Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone knew the specs to set up a 1976 Merlyn mk 29? Camber, caster, toe, etc. Also, for the Dunlop Vintage tires used by VRG, what is a good pressure to run?
I know the answer to all of these questions varies, but I am looking for a good baseline to set my car up at for running at Summit Point.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

How Much Heat can Carbon Fiber Withstand?
How much heat can carbon fiber stand?
I'm modifying the brake ducts on my car - originals were Lola carbon fiber two halves cemented together. I'm extending the front scoops - rectangular aluminum box section but curved in plan view. To make sure they fit properly over the carbon fiber I'm going to Cleco them in place and have my expert welder stitch weld - then fully weld off the carbon fiber later.
How near to the carbon fiber can he weld - that's aluminum, not steel - I assume TIG.
Thanks

Car Updating And Development
As the title states I'm at a bit of a cross road with our current car(s). We bought and built from the frame up two Carbir DS3 chassis 1 and 2. Over the seasons we have added small updates here and there, overhauled the cars a few times and always had the cars in tip top shape and no expense was ever spared. We took part in mostly club racing and liked the idea of taking it further but we liked keeping this as family oriented as possible as it was always time well spent. Fast forward to now, the cars have not been updated to be as competitive on the national level and would maybe struggle a little. I am tossing around the idea of taking one of the cars and going the Zetec conversion route. Reason being its more modern and a bit more durable and from what I read last longer between rebuilds when compared to the pinto. I understand the conversion is a major investment and I need more information before I pull the trigger on this. I am looking for information from drivers, mechanics, or crew about the pros and cons about this. I apologize if this has been talked about a handful of times but with a decision this expensive its good to hear what you guys have to say. Below is a picture of the current engine configuration and car.

Tire Stagger and Corner Weights ...
My memory is fading. I'd like reminders about these two topics.
IIRC (and feel free to poke holes in these thoughts), for road racing with plenty of left and right turns, we generally don't want tire stagger. But we might want it for a track with predominantly (right/left) turns, like Lime Rock. For instance, you might want your two bigger tires on the outer side of the car.
And, if we buy a set of tires, we want to at least know if they are staggered, because where they are on the car will affect corner weights (and handling).
Reason for asking: At a recent race I bought new tires and didn't have a tape measure with me, so I asked to borrow one. The lender (sedan racer) thought I was nuts. I started to explain why and realized I wasn't completely clear about some of the aspects.
After thinking about it for awhile, I came up with these questions:
I know there are a thousand other variables affecting handling, but I'm interested to hear opinions about these two. TIA.

After thinking about it for awhile, I came up with these questions:
- If one of my new tires is slightly bigger than the other three, should I put it on the outside front?
- If the circumference is .5" bigger, is that significant enough to even notice a difference (on a scale platform or on the track)?
- Are today's tires (by Hoosier, etc.) consistent enough that we don't need to worry about it?
- If a car is pushing slightly before the apex (not allowing me to go full throttle as soon as I'd like), could spring perch changes (weight jacking) help?
- If yes, would you want to put more weight on the outside front tire (to give it more "influence"), or would you remove weight from it because it's got too much already and that's why it's pushing.
I know there are a thousand other variables affecting handling, but I'm interested to hear opinions about these two. TIA.

St Louis Region Gateway results
Not much good news from St Louis. Chuck Singletary qualified first in race group 4 both days and lowered the FST track record down to 1:15. Bill Gray qualified 3rd in the race group on his first time at Gateway. Due to mechanical issues Bill was unable to start the race on both days while Chuck was involved in a small incident in turn 8 entering the speedway oval and unable to finish Saturdays race. On Sunday Chuck suffered mechanical issues after 6 laps and was unable to finish. It was a tough weekend for both cars but being the first outing of 2014 an opportunity to sort out the cars. The host region of St Louis did a super job with the event.

Bandit Hill Climb/A-Mod Autocross car for sale

1982 BANDIT Hill Climb Special/Autocross Car FOR SALE
"BANDIT", Mazda13B ported rotary powered, mid-engine, winged, single
seat hill climb /autocross car. Built and campaigned by Ohio's Jerry Kieft,
"Bandit" became the car to beat in the PA/NC hill climb scene during the '80s and
early '90s, and accumulated a stack of FTD trophies, including the current
hill record holder at Chimney Rock Hill climb. It also holds the PHA class
record at (old) Pagoda, Giants Despair, and Jefferson. In 2011 I bought it and
spent a lot of money and effort bringing it up to date in the safety area.
It now passes PHA's stiff tech requirements, which are tougher than the
SCCA's. Bandit is a ferociously fast, 1200 lb. car with corner down force
from its 3 element front and rear wings that has to be experienced to be believed.
Runs on Atlantic tires and has a 51 IDA Weber Carb. Brand new FIA Belts good to
2018.
I have had many Great moments in this car, one of the best was a class
record at Jefferson, and the 2011 S-2 Class Championship, finishing 7th
overall for 2011. I am retiring from the sport and am offering it for sale.
This is a very competitive car and is ready for some serious competition.
Spares: Quick Jack, transponder, oil filters, fuel filter, Rev limiter,
extra jets, Carb. Gaskets, and other Misc. items. Current Log Books, and
lots of pictures and documentation.
I can forward pictures if interested. PRICE: $8950. Contact at
mwilson219@comcast.net
P.S. Don't waste my time if you are not interested. I also never liked "lets make a deal" on TV!
I also have trailer and Pit Bike listed under trailers for sale. Will sell both together for reduced price.
The car fits the trailer like a glove.

DB-1 slave cylinder, TOB, clutch issues
Guys,
We had a great turn out at Roebling for FF/CF this weekend, and had a great time, but I am still fighting my clutch. I replaced an AP clutch with a Tilton [both 5 inch], and the gap was too large, so we cut a 0.2 spacer from an old piston, to fit behind the TOB, moving it forward and decreasing the gap. Now I find that the first time I push the clutch, I go 2/3rds down, and can't mesh gears. I release and push again, the clutch pedal goes a third further, and now I can get gears. The thing is hard as a rock, and engages very sharply, much worse than the AP. I plan to buy new seals, as I used my spares last week putting in the spacer, and thought I'd get a new TOB to see if that helps, but Taylor is unsure of which bearing to use.
1] Any ideas why adding a spacer made my clutch require the two-step?
2] any references for the correct TOB for a Swift DB-1?
