I need an engine crate for a kent to ship to and from my engine builder. It could be buy or borrow. I am in Peoria, IL.

FC rod rule update recommended

it is recommended that the FC connecting rod rule be updated to the form used for Kents. the update would be administratively sound and provide competitors a compliant means to improve bottom end service interval.

for reference the FFord rule is included below:

12. Kent Engine

j. Connecting Rods

Any ferrous connecting rod may be used provided it meets a minimum weight of 630 grams and has a center to center length of 4.925 +/- 0.020 inches. (Note: Weights include cap, bolts, and small end bush, but not big end bearing shells).

the current FC rule reads:

15. Ford NE series and Pinto Engines

h. Full connecting rods may be standard Ford, Cosworth, Oliver, or Crower. The approved Crower part numbers are SP93230B-4 or SP93230PF-4. Any rod bolts may be used. Floating piston pins may be used. Standard rod length must be 5.00 inches (+.005” -.010”). Machining is permitted to remove metal from the balancing bosses to achieve balance only. Tuftriding, Parkerizing, shot peening, shot blasting, polishing, etc., are permitted

the recommended update would read:

h. any ferrous connecting rod may be used provided its length between the small end and large end is 5.00 inches (+0.005" -0.010") and when installed is compliant with 15. f. wrist pins are unrestricted provided no modification is made to the piston for installation and when installed is compliant with 15. f.

as an aside, floating pins are already unrestricted. the recommended update would extend "unrestricted" to pressed pins and explicitly exclude modification to the piston for installation.

for reference:

15. Ford NE series and Pinto Engines

f. Pistons shall be standard Ford Mahle, AE Hepolite, CP, or J&E. Pistons must be unmodified in any way except for balancing and as detailed herein.

The following combinations are permitted:

1. Mahle piston P/N 80HM6102LA with rings, pin, connecting rod

(with bolts), but without bearings:Minimum permitted weight = 1332.5 grams.

2. Mahle piston P/N 85HM6102DA with rings, pin, connecting rod (with bolts), but without bearings: Minimum permitted weight = 1240 grams.

NOTE: This piston may have either casting #90V108 or #90V118.

3. AE Hepolite piston P/N 21426, casting P/N 21426 (AE Hepolite) with rings, pin, connecting rod (with bolts), but without bearings: Minimum permitted weight = 1240 grams.

4. CP piston P/N IV 2.0 LTR with rings, pin, connecting rod (with bolts), but without bearings: Minimum permitted weight = 1240 grams. Part number and Ivey logo stamped on wrist pin bosses.

5. JE piston P/N M-6102-B200 with rings, pin, connecting rod (with bolts), but without bearings: Minimum permitted weight = 1240 grams.

NOTE: M-6102-B200 piston assembly is now made by JE and is visually different. I.D. Marks: M-6102-B200, Ford racing logo. All marks pin stamped on wrist pin bosses.

Rings are unrestricted provided that:

A. One oil control and two compression rings are used.

B. No modification is made to the piston for the installation of the rings.

Localized machining of the gudgeon pin bosses to achieve balance and weight by simple machining; all external surfaces, dimensions, and profiles shall remain standard with the exception of the top surface of the piston crown which may have simple machining to achieve balance, and as required in Section 9.1.1.B.3.d.

Generation Gap

I stopped by the Batteries Plus store this morning for a new battery for the Reynard.

Two guys in the store. One old geezer like me & a young kid about 30. The older guy & I start talking about Formula Racing, BIR, Paul Newman, etc.

We both have stories of meeting Paul at BIR. Paul's career in movies & his racing for decades.

I noticed the 30 yr old looking rather puzzled. I asked him if he knew who we were talking about ? He had never heard of Paul Newman. Absolutely clueless.

I felt a bit older as I left the store....

Final Checker falls for SCCA multiple time National Champ

Dan Carmichael took the final checkered flag this morning at age 96.

After an amazing life as a naval aviator flying fighters off carriers in the Pacific in WWII. Dan was a triple ace pilot with 13 confirmed and two additional acknowledged shot down. An ace being 5 confirmed "kills".

He starting racing when the navy said he was to old to test fly jets anymore ultimately winning three SCCA National Championships starting with CSR in 1969 and 1970 and then Formula Atlantic in 1995 at the ripe age of 75.

He was well known as an athlete in Columbus Ohio winning the Ohio Amateur Golf championship 1960. Also a successful and established architect designing mainly schools and hospitals.

A graduate of Princeton in 1941 Dan and wife Patti Teachnor Carmichael had three children Tracy now 66, Danny now 64 and Sally now 61. Dan was predeceased by Patti's passing n 2008.

Dan's close racing bud Charlie Dietrich, who always referred to him and called Dan "Ace", passed just a year ago and undoubtedly they are rehashing their races, won and lost, as races always do.

The best racing competition in the world!

Formula Student Germany may be the best race engineering competition if not the best overall racing competition in the world. The top teams far exceed the technical expertise seen in club racing and I now know for a fact that the knowledge level of best teams in Formula Student / Formula SAE even exceed that of some in F!! In addition, many of the drivers are nationally if not internationally competitive racers.

This is where Formula SAE and Formula Student teams from engineering schools around the world build a new formula race car every year and compete in engineering design, cost presentation, marketing presentation, skid pad, acceleration, autocross and endurance events. The team accumulating the most total points from all events is named champion for the year.

Should anyone have an interest in watching the free livestream from the FSG competition in Germany this weekend, August 1 - 3, 2014, here is the link and schedule: http://ift.tt/1xBAwa8

Here is the link to FSG: http://ift.tt/1kneeso

And here is the link to FSAE: http://ift.tt/1xBAvmF

Of course I have my favorite – GFR / Oregon State University – my alma mater, won FSG last year and FSAE Michigan this year and makes use of my shop, and perhaps a bit of advice, for tuning shocks.

Anyone need a ride to Leguna Seca Runoffs??

We have room for 3 cars that need to be transported from the Georgia Area to Leguna Seca for the runoffs. Pricing will include use of RV and place for car under our enclosed tent (60'x 26') We will be setting up a hospitality section under the tent as well.

$4500 per car (from Atlanta Georgia area), we can also come pick up your vehicle anywhere on the east coast for an additional cost ($1 per mile travel). You can also have our guys maintain the car during the week for an additional cost.

Lubrico Warranty Race 2, Toronto Indy

NEWEY WINS LUBRICO WARRANTY RACE 2

TORONTO, ON (July 20, 2014) - Race 2 of the F1600 Duals presented by Lubrico Warranty was just as thrilling as Race 1, but a reversal of fortune for the top two protagonists.

In Race 1 Tristan DeGrand came out on top after contact with Brandon Newey and grabbed the top spot on the podium, keeping his perfect win record intact. The two young lions came together again, at the same point on the racetrack but this time it was Newey who benefited and recorded his first win in just his second start in the series.

It was DeGrand who lead the field to the green based on his fast time in Race 1 with Chase Pelletier alongside. The entire field made it through the first lap without incident and the top 7 cars started to battle right away.

Pelletier would fall to 4th with Chastain making his way to the front quickly. Newey was chasing down DeGrand who had made one of his signature opening laps and had a 3 car lead.

On lap 4 Reid Arnold and Max Hanratty came together at the end of the long Lakeshore straight, the spot where most of the action was in both races, and damaged his right front suspension and slid into the runoff area unable to continue. Hanratty would continue but near the end of the race suffered a failure ending his day early as well.

The safety car was dispatched on lap 5 after a nasty hit by “B” class points and race leader Connor Wagland on the front straightaway, destroying the right side of his car. He would get out under his own power and was released in good health by medical staff shortly thereafter.

The restart allowed the field to be bunched back up, setting the stage for some drama.

DeGrand and Newey resumed the fight for the lead and stormed down the long straightaway, DeGrand on the outside and Newey on the inside with neither wanting to budge. The inevitable contact had DeGrand in the air and Newey with the lead. DeGrand fell almost to the back of the field, but would recover and storm back to the 11th spot by the end of the race.

Newey had it his way over the final laps and would win by 2 seconds. Behind him the action was furious. Returning Series Champion Jack Mitchell, Jr. was on form and brought his car home 2nd repeating his podium result from Race 1. Zacharie Robichon would grab the 3rd and final podium spot on the second to last lap in an unreal drive from the 14th starting position, some redemption for the talented driver’s frustrating season.

Chase Pelletier was a big factor in the fight all day and brought his car home in 4th followed by Olivier Bedard and Sam Chastain.

Other notable drives were Michel Bonnet, who was as high as 2nd for several laps and fought hard for a 7th and Steve Bamford who raced hard from 15th to 9th.

It was a first time winner in the “B” Class for Amy Castell and her family run team. The cheers were loud and emotions were flowing as she took the top step over Steve Bodrug who had a great run in his first race with the series this season. The “B’ Class IronMan, Mike Lee, grabbed yet another trophy with his solid 3rd place finish.

Next up for the F1600 Super Series is the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, the last date on the calendar August 7-10. The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship will resume August 22-24.

Lubrico Warranty Race 1, Toronto Indy

LUBRICO WARRANTY RACE 1 TO DEGRAND

TORONTO, ON (July 18, 2014) - Race 1 of the F1600 Duals presented by Lubrico Warranty was an intense battle throughout the field, and once again, the name DeGrand sits at the top of the results sheet.

DeGrand did not have it easy though. Brandon Newey made the trip north and very quickly let it be known that he was here looking for a win.

The first corner of any street race is always precarious. DeGrand held the lead through the first complex of corners. Just behind Zacharie Robichon and Michel Bonnet made contact with Robichon getting airborne, causing the field to scramble and Bruno Chapinotti to spin. All would continue.

One of the favourites, Steve Bamford, was hit from behind by Craig Willis and damaged enough that his race was over.

There was more damage at the end of Lakeshore straightaway on lap 1, with Marcel Lafontaine suffering some damage to his left front suspension and unable to continue. His incident would bring out the first full course caution of the day.

The car of Lafontaine was quickly removed and at the drop of the green DeGrand was challenged immediately by Newey, forcing him wide and allowing a charging Pelletier to also slip by.

Newey opened up a gap over the battling Pelletier and DeGrand, with Pelletier unable to hold him off for long. DeGrand put his head down and chased Newey down, making a bold pass for the lead as two competitors behind them, Brian Fowler and Yves Beaudoin made contact, stranding Fowler and bringing out the 2nd full course caution.

The car of Fowler was removed quickly allowing the race to go back to green with a few minutes left and setting the stage for some last lap heroics. On the final lap Newey was tucked right up under the gearbox of DeGrand and looking to get by.

DeGrand drive down the right side of the long Lakeshore straight and as the two hit the breaking zone Newey made an aggressive move to the left, clipping the left rear of DeGrand and getting in the air. As he spun into the runoff area all of the following drivers managed to miss him. DeGrand would bring his car to the checkered as the winner, followed by Jack Mitchell, Jr. and Chase Pelletier. Sam Chastain had a remarkable race to move up to 4th at the end followed by Olivier Bedard. Newey would recover and bring it home in 15th.

“That was an amazing race,” said a jubilant DeGrand. “I hate it that it ended in tears for Newey because we really raced each other hard but I am really happy to get the win at this event and in front of a large crowd. I can’t wait to get back in the car tomorrow and see if we can make it a perfect weekend.”

In the B Class battle Connor Wagland had a great race with pole sitter David Graham, Steve Bodrug and Amy Castell. Wagland had an eventful run, having to avoid the spinning Chapinotti at the start and then collect himself and put his head down for the remainder of the race.

Castell looked like she was destined for a podium finish but got caught up in some late race action and dropped one spot after one of the yellow flag zones.

“I had so much fun in that race,” said a happy Connor Wagland. “This is my first street race and the Honda Indy is such a cool event I’m thrilled to get the win here today. My car has worked well all weekend and I’m going to go for it again tomorrow.

Race 2 for the F1600 Duals presented by Lubrico Warranty will go green at 6:15pm, directly after Indycar race 2.

45th Formula Ford Blast!

Do you want to take a step back in time and enjoy racing the way is was back in the late '60's or the '70's or even the 80's at a family owned and operated track where customer service is foremost? Where it's not going to cost you a house payment just for entry fees? Where the track has just been totally resurfaced and is as smooth as a baby's butt ! Where there is elevation change, technically challenging circuit requiring car control and driving skills, a 45th Anniversary Formula Ford Feature Race in addition to four other races Saturday and Sunday? An event where there is a podium celebration with cheap champagne to drink or spray on any one close, waist high trophies for the winners in each of the 3 Formula Ford Classes (FF1, FF2, FF3) . The Hallett Racing Circuit in October, yes the same weekend as COTA, is where CVAR is now offering Pre-Registration to reserve a grid spot in one of the Nations best Formula Ford weekends ever!

We went to COTA last year and watched a black Titan out run many of the FB entries, experienced the "load in" with 600 other entries, shelled out a boat load of cash for everything including $500 for the privilege of practicing on Wednesday, with limited track time, and no races on Sunday.

Hallett with CVAR October 10, 11, 12, 2014 is the place to be racing...period! Go to DLB Racing and register now! CVAR is limiting the 45th Anniversary Formula Ford Feature to just 30 Formula Fords total! FF1 Monoposto pre 1972, FF2 Club Fords running slicks pre 1980, and FF3 (the latest Test Vintage Class) pre 1986 running slicks.

Autumn at Hallett in a Formula Ford is almost Heaven. Here is your chance to run with the best on a racing circuit built for our class! A circuit with rhythm, not a "point and shoot" track.

We hope you'll join our party!

Formula Ford Cylinder Head Information

Hi,

I am trying to find out any performance related information about a couple of Formula Ford Kent cylinder heads I have.

One is stamped “JO CCH SW1” on the intake mating surface, which I believe indicates that was ported by Jim Ortell of Competition Cylinder Heads. It is painted black, has yellow striped valve springs, and based on the head gasket surface to valve cover mating surface measurement (3.2 inches), has not been resurfaced.

The other cylinder head is stamped, on three lines, “0035 USA, 5-4-90, RLL.” From a similar measurement, it looks like it has been resurfaced, cut 0.015 inches. It is also painted black and came on an engine with an “831C 6015 R34” block, without the “AX “ marking. From what I have found elsewhere on the web, it is likely a Ford Motorsports block from the UK( it does have the “sundial” figure cast into the block), so the head might have come from the UK as well.

Best regards,

Lowell

What do I have?

I could use some help figuring out what I've purchased. I'm thinking it is a F440. It came with the original Chaparral engine, but now is powered by a Arctic Cat 550 twin. I have cleaned it up and have it running good. Brakes work, but I want to rebuild them, probably update the master cylinders as this has twins and kind of a make shift proportional linkage. I don't know much about cyntrificle clutches, but it does seem to work. The rear gear box that drives the rear pumpkin in what might be a VW rear end is rather new to me. I'm thinking this allows a way to change the gear ratio for different application. Needd tires so I could use help finding reasonable prices scrubs. front is 20x8x13 and rear are 20x9.5x13. I want to restore the car into a Jim Clark Tribute Green/Yellow Lotus 49 theme as garage art, but also will likely XC and track it at club days 1-2 a year just to put a smile on my face.

The car was campaigned in the NW SCCA I believe probably in the 80's perhaps even 90's. I bought it out of the Roseburg Oregon area and it came with no history or details.

Who was the Chassis Mfg?

Does anyone remember the car?

It as a A/M on the side so I believe this was the Class it raced in but was this just F440?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Bolts with just a small unthreaded portion under the head

There are a whole lot of bolts—SAE and metric—on my RF89 that hold on something that is perhaps 1/16" - 3/16" thick.

So what I'd like to know is: is there a bolt supplier that makes bolts in various sizes (from about 1/4" to 1/2" diameter) where only the last 1/8" or so doesn't have any threads?

I'd like to make sure that—despite the bolts being properly tight and so in theory there being no movement between the parts, there is no thread bearing on where the bracket (for example) for the inner rod end that bolts to the transaxle. Or where the bellhousing-oil tank is bolted to the main frame tubes.

Does this make sense to anyone and does anyone have an answer?

Mychron 4

Can a Mychron 4 be used in a Vee? Never used one before but picked one up real cheap from a cart racer getting out of carts.

Jorge Segers Data Seminar

I'm hosting a data seminar that is bringing Jorge Segers, author of Analysis Techniques for Race Car Data Acquisition, to Manchester, NH on November 20 & 21. The seminar is two days and will cover the full range of data analysis topics including driver and car analysis. There will also be sections on damper analysis, IR tire temps, IR brake temps, car balance, and much more. You can find more info at http://ift.tt/1xqMX8M and http://files.js-engineering.webnode....ure%202014.pdf

The seminar is very expensive to put together, so it will cost $1,250 a person. I've worked out a discount on rooms at the host hotel. Lunch and snacks will be provided on both days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or if you need more info. My email is matt@trailbrake.net and my phone is 603 - 674 - 3250.
